Reading Trail Committee TOWN CLERK Minutes: Joan Hoyt
January 11, 2011 F~Er;[);PG> MASS.
2011 MA
Members: Tom Gardiner, Alan Rosh, Joan Hoyt
Assoc. Members: Will Finch, John Parsons
In Attendance: Kim Honetschlager - GIS Coordinator
Fran Fink - Conservation Commission Administrator
Town Forest Committee Members: George Perry, Mike DeBrigard,
Patrice Todisco, Mark Wetzel, Tom Gardiner.
The meeting came to order at 7:10 p.m. at Reading Town Hall.
Town Forest Committee:
Members of the Town Forest Committee joined the members of the Trail Committee in
discussion about how the groups can improve communication with each other, as well
as with the Conservation Commission. The communication between the groups is most
important when it comes to Eagle Scout projects in the Town Forest or on Conservation
land. Fran stated that Scouts have to approach the Conservation Committee first, as a
regulatory body. Many times they have their own ideas about a project in the Town
Forest for example so she always refers them to the Town Forest Committee. There
was discussion about the possibility of creating a document/form which has to be signed
off either by the Town Forest Committee, the Conservation Committee or by the Trails
Committee, as well as the Scout Leaders, once a project has been completed by the
Scout. This process would ensure projects have been completed successfully and are
up to standard.
Mark will contact the Scout Troop Committee and discuss with them the possibility of
creating a document/form to be signed off upon the completion of a project.
Eagle Scout:
Rick Palermo of Troop 702 gave an update on his plans to post maps in the Town
Forest at trail intersections on small "kiosks". Will asked if he would stain the wood of
the "kiosks" green to give them a nice finished look. Rick agreed to do so. It was
suggested that the maps should have a red graphic to show a "you are here" message
to aid people in deciphering the maps. Rick needs approval from the Committees in
order to move forward.
Voted: The Trails Committee voted 3-0 in favor of Rick moving forward on this project.
The Town Forest Committee will vote on this during their next meeting.
Eagle Scout:
Will Guile of Troop 704 attended the meeting but has no ideas for an Eagle Scout
project at this time. He has a few years to plan his project. Fran listed a few ideas at
Pinevale and Kurchian Woods, possible Town Forest project ideas could be invasive
species removal, mapping and/or blazing trails.
New Business:
Septima (Tima) Sensenig, Director of Business Development, from Roux Associates,
Inc. came to the meeting. "Roux" is an environmental consulting firm located in .
Burlington, MA. The Ipswich River Watershed Association suggested she connect with
the Committee. Tima is looking for projects that 5-15 of Roux's employees could
volunteer to work on four times a year, working towards the improvement and/or care of
the Ipswich River Basin. Ideas suggested were preparing and painting inside the
Mattera cabin; stenciling storm water drains to bring awareness to what is poured into
them and/or building a kayak launch. Tima will discuss the options with the volunteers
and contact Fran.
Tom will ask Sue to post the upcoming Winter Hikes on patch.com and in the town
papers.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
Voted to adjourn the meeting (3-0). The meeting adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
