November 9, 2010
N
Members: Tom Gardiner, Joan Hoyt, Dave Williams, Alan Rosh, Swan
Giacalone, John Parsons
In Attendance: Kim Honetschlager - GIS Coordinator w
Fran Fink - Conservation Commission Administrator C)
The meeting came to order at 7:05 p.m. at the Reading Town Hall, Berger R Vim.
Because Fran and Kim had to be at another meeting at 7:30, the committee w
heard from Fran on a number of things. See her list entitled "Suggestions - Trail
Committee meeting 11/9/10" which is attached to these Minutes in two pages.
There was discussion, ideas and follow up on Fran's list:
Bare Meadow:
Alan suggested he may be able to relocate the sign from its current
location up closer to the street where the Committee has placed markers. The
committee has decided to do this so the area is more visible to visitors.
Dave suggested asking the DPW to spray/treat the area for eliminating
knotweed.
Town Forest:
The Alligator Alley boardwalk replacement project plans are coming along.
There are two Scouts working toward their Eagle Scout awards. Their names
are Tom Hegarty and Thomas Coltman. They will be working on the two ends of
the boardwalk which should complete the boardwalk and allow safe walking
through the wet area.
Minutes:
The Minutes from Sept. 13, 2010 and Sept. 29, 2010 were reviewed and
approved as amended .with a vote of 5 - 0. Alan will type up and bring the
Minutes from the Oct. 12, 2010 meeting to the January 11, 2011 meeting.
Budget Request:
Discussion about a budget request from the Trails Committee to the Board
of Selectmen in the amount of $1,500:
a. $1,100 of this amount would be used to support various projects in
2011 such as trail improvement, maintenance and the upkeep of
existing and future trails;
b. $400 of this amount would include but not be limited to the purchase of
a "buckthorn puller", a "bammer" and an adjustable tree lopper.
c. Discussion about whether or not the RTC should contact Jim Bonazoli
as liason between the RTC and the BOS in support of the budget
request.

d. Joan will draft a budget request letter and the Committee will review it
before forwarding it to the Board of Selectmen.
Adopt-a-Trail Program:
Training: Tom suggested having Will train those of the Committee
that are interested and then they can train the adopters.
Adopter List:
Discussion about having the Committee members maintain the list
of adopters which would take one thing off of Fran's busy schedule of
things to do.
It was suggested that there be a list of volunteer contacts separate
from the adopter contact list so that volunteers could be e-mailed when
projects come up.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2011 @ 7:00 p.m.
Voted to adjourn the meeting (5-0). The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Suggestions - Trail Committee meeting 11/9/10
Mattera Cabin
• Thanks for putting the kiosk in! I posted "you are here" map and rules. Room for
some natural history stuff. Are the traffic cones ours or DPW's? .
• Need locks on garage doors. (Joan found them open this weekend.) Have funds
available for cabin renovations. Might be able to get Voc. School kids to install?
• Inventory materials inside ? Some are for Maplewood. Others left from past
work or donated - can be used for future work.
• Sue has the paint - keeping it warm for the winter. Thanks!
• Joan has potential adopters - any more definite news? UI A SOLJ %
Bare Meadow
• Need to repair and move sign at Pearl Street entrance. Is this on DPW work list to
auger holes?
Pinevale
• New bridge has very steep ramp on south side of stream - handrails? Traction on
decking? Rebuild?
• Bog bridges in southwestern end need some repairs.
• Sign boards at Pinevale entrance need repairs.
• Need sign posts at Park and Maple entrances - good project for the Scout troop
that has adopted the north half. Need to contact leader of troop, walk through.
• A lot of poison ivy in the southwestern part of the trail.
• Need to bring in fill to harden some parts of southwestern trail.
Kurchian
• Grant application is in - won't hear until next spring.
• Should repair broken planks in existing boardwalk now.
• Should get more information from Acton about the pipe footings - tips on
installation and long-term use. Maybe do a trip to see trails where they have used
this?
• Could take extra fill from Bare Meadow/Haverhill entrance and put it at eroded
Pondview Lane entrance to stabilize this area. Before the pile freezes? Ask the
adopters to help?
Town Forest
• I saw Kerry Mackin from IRWA at a workshop last Friday. She is interested in
restoration work and recreational plans now that the water treatment plant is gone.
I said that TFC, TC, and others are just beginning plans for the area, and this
would be a good time for her to make suggestions.
• TFC met recently, and will meet again Nov. 17. Does anyone know what was
discussed ?
0 Tom H boardwalk looks good - did he include a ramp at the end?'
