Lahood, M. Pacino, C. Perletz, D. Reinemann, R. Welsch The minutes of 3/8/94 accepted as is. The Mission Statement was finalized and completed - after 3 readings, it was accepted as: "The mission of Coolidge Middle School is to create a varied, challenging environment that develops confident learners who can be both collaborative and self-directed, possessing the skills to acquire knowledge and wisdom through a lifetime." Al Lahood distributed handouts on: Parker Middle School -3/2/94- School Council Notes RMHS - Master Plan A Coolidge Core Values proposal R. Welsch distributed information on How Schools are Shortchanging The Gifted. The council was impressed with the Core Values proposal. Members felt that it was an excellent beginning and possible blueprint for future action. The Council members hoped that the School group would include a time frame and areas of responsibility. The Council felt that the statement of Core Values should be kept to a few reasonable attainable needs. Council members. made some revisions to be presented to the current group who submitted this proposal. These changes are included with this report. See attached sheet: In the original proposal, several other Needs objectives were listed and should be held in obeisance for future reference as well as the staff development needs. Council members turned their attention to the second improvement plan category "Develop means for meeting diverse learning needs". Larry Chomsky agreed to update his computer record on this plan and present it to the school council members at the next meeting for additional review. Next meeting dates: March 31, 1994 7:15 P.M. April 5, 1994 7:15 P.M. For March 31st date - S.C. members are asked to read through all the handouts and review the second plan category on diverse learning needs for redundancy, current process on accomplishment and to decide on what needs to be done both long and short term. Core Values Goal: % To Establish a committee which will formulate a statement of core values for Coolidge Middle School. Rationale: The school meeds some central beilefs around which to structure all learning. Needs Objectives: * Need to survey staff and parents regarding core values . * Need to schedule meetings to discuss common beliefs. * Need to produce a draft statement of core values. (John Duria had some suggestions based on his Wellesley Middle School efforts 1. Think critically 2. Take risks 3. Be responsible for their actions 4. Be caring citizens in a larger community) * Need to revie W suggestions from staff and parents. * Need to produce and communicate the statement of core values for Coolidge Middle School. Staff Development Needs: The statement of Core Values will determine the direction of staff development and other needs.
