Coolidge School Council Munutes - January 31, 1995 The meeting was called to order by chairperson, Carol Perletz, at 7:30 in the Media Center. Attending: Lou Adreani, John Carpenter, Larry Chomsky, Peter Hichborn, Carol Perletz, Sue Redgate, and Roy Welsch. Minutes by: S. Redgate. Minutes of the January 9, 1995 meeting were amended to change (under Student Learning Time Regulations) SSR does not count as instructional time to MAY NOT count as instructional time. It was agreed that the next meetings will be on February 15th, 28th, and March 14, 1995. Handouts: Middle School Redistricting, Report from Time and Learning Study Group, Technology Survey Summary and Report, Inclusion Profile Progress Reports: Re-districting - Lou reported on a Joint council meeting held at Coolidge on January 24, 1995. Parent participants from Coolidge were Ann Natale and Karen Burke. Several options were presented. A "Phased-In" approached generated interest among those present. Plans will be presented to Advisory Group as to how this could best be accomplished, along with other revisions, prior to presenting to School Committee for approval and implementation. Peter questioned item #3 under Process (Middle School Redistricting - handout). How were the numbers arrived at? Why is Parker (supposedly) at capacity at 600 and Coolidge at 450? What standards were applied (i.e. square footage per student) to arrive at these numbers? Lou agreed to do some research and report back to us A.S.A.P.. Principal Search - Larry reported that the search committee met and advertisements should appear in the Boston Globe and Education Week sometime mid February. The cut off datefor applicants is April 1, 1995. Committee will then reconvene and submit six finalist to the acting superintendent by early May. Dr. Munnelly's Replacement - Presently two candidates have come forward, Dennis Richards, Assistant Superintendent, and Bill O'Connell, Director of Special Education. 1995 Coolidge Middle School Improvement Plan Council expressed concern that the needs of all students-may not be sufficiently addressed in the current School Improvement Plan. ( Inclusion Profile addresses the needs of students with limitations) It was decided, therefore, by the Council to update the improvement Plan to include the "Limitless Learning" program as a tool to further challenge our more gifted students. The additions were as follows: Goal #2, Meeting Diverse Learning Needs. Under Action Plan, Task #6 was added: Implement Limitless Learning profile, Supporting Needs (BCD,), Responsibility of School Council, Time Frame, Wurter 94 - 95. Under Goal #4, professional De-!71crrnent & Allocation ofProfessional Development Funds: Action Plan, Task 93 was added: Limitless Learning Workshops, Supporting Needs (A,C,D), Responsibility of peter H'ichborn, Joe Finnegan, and Ellen Svenson, Time Frame,'94 -'97. Time and Learning Implementation Plan - Council decided to add an additional goal to the School Improvement Plan: #5 Learning rime Implementation Plan. Lou reported that the Time and Learning Study Group will meet on February 1st to further discuss options. We must be in compliance with the new regulations of 990 instructional hours by September, '95. Presently, the Study Group is considering lengthening the periods from 46 to 48 minutes and extending the day from 2:18 to 2:20. Suggestion for Additional Goal #6 - John expressed concern that the Improvement Plan may not address issues of measurement and evaluation. John will draft his ideas for consideration at our next meeting. Tentative Time Frame - The council agreed on May 1st as a tentative deadline for completion of the School Improvement Plan. Emphasis will be placed on Goal #3 - Technology, as well as addressing the additions of "Limitless Learning" and "Learning Tune Implementation Plan." Action Items: 1. Larry and Roy will report on the status of Technology Study. 2. Lou will provide information on how numbers at Parker and Coolidge were arrived at. 3.
