Minutes - February 15, 1995
The meeting was called to order by chairperson, Sue Redgate, at 7:30 in the Media
Center.
Attending: Lou Adreani, John Carpenter, Larry Chomsky, Peter Hichborn, Carol
Perlitz, Sue Redgate, Roy Welsch.
Minutes by: Roy Welsch
It was agreed that the next meetings will be on February 28 and March 14, 1995
Handouts: Coolidge Middle School - Technology Survey Summary and Report,
Questions concerning the 1995 update of the School Improvement Plan (John
Carpenter).
The minutes were approved as written with the change in the title from M.Unutes to
Minutes.
Progress Reports:
Re-districting: Lou answered questions raised at the last meeting about square
footage per student at Coolidge and Parker (new building), noting that there will be
substantially less square footage per student at Coolidge than at Parker if Parker is
capped at 600 students due to State building regulations. There was considerable
discussion of various ways to balance the student populations. No firm decisions were
reached.
Technology Study: Larry Chomsky and Roy Welsch presented a summary of the
technolgy needs of the faculty and staff as expressed in the Technolgy Survey. The
needs are wide-ranging and the lack of resources implies that serious compromises
will have to be made. There is a desire to have a completely re-equipped computer
room, a writing laboratory, and some machines in individual rooms as well as
adequate training and software. There were also many requests for CD-ROMs,
scanners, projection devices, large screen monitors, and networking.
Space is also a critical issue. There is no space for a writing lab given the projected
enrollments for Coolidge. A suggestion was made that the School investigate the use
.of space in the YMCA for the old Apple II computers so they would be available during
the day to Coolidge and, perhaps, to a larger community at other times. Lou Adreani
said that he would investigate this option.
The was some feeling that the computer curriculum proposed for use in the Computer
Room did not require the purchase of overly sophisticated machines for that location.
However, it was noted that Parker was doing more with its computer curriculum
because they had more sophisticated equipment to work with. The School Council
requested a plan for how the new technology would be used in the computer
curriculum at Coolidge.
There was agreement that the School Improvement Plan should be updated to
address the curriculum, professional development, and staffing issues related to
technology.
Larry Chomsky and Roy Welsch agreed to work on a functional specification for the
new computers in the Computer Room. All agreed that the Apple 11's in this room need
to be replaced.
1995 Updates to the School Improvement Plan: John Carpenter handed out
some questions about the current plan with some suggestions for changes and
improvements. He is also proposing a new section aimed at ensuring the
effectiveness of our improvement efforts. These topics will be addressed in the next
meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 pm.
