The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 7,10 o'clock.
The records of the last meeting wdre read and approved.
The remaining budgets for 1940 were taken up and the following votes
were passed:
Voted to recommend Fire Department Callmen Salaries $3546.00; Fire
Department Maintenance E13735.00; Fire Stations Maintenance ;?1220..00;
Fire Alarm Maintenance 4'1550.00; Fare Alarm New Boxes 6400.00.
The School Committee appeared regarding the 19 ;.0 budget, it having,-
been informed of the action of the Finance Board at the meeting January
24th. Chm. Tanner, Mrs. Twombly, Mir. Clinch and Mr. Austin, and Supt.
Grover were in attendance. The first matter taken up for discussion
was the increase in the estimate for salaries. It was brought out that
the additional appropriation was to take care of the regular step up in
teachers ° salaries and to provide two new teachers. The matter of
transportation was also discussed and it was suggested that this matter
be referred to a later meeting.
The Board of Public I orks next appeared, Chm. Davis, iv'Ir. Lindsay,
Mr. Brophy and Supto l Welch. The reduction from the original estimates
which were voted croon at the previous meeting were gone over and in each
case the Board accepted the same. It was stated ho~;rever, that the pro-
posed lay-out of Mich&lini La_-e had been given up, but that Eaton Street
an(- i ;Ialotll'a Road betterments had been petitioned for and the Board felt
that t__. streets should be accepted. It was suggested that the labor
might be provided under W.P. A. The matter of overhanging sidewalk
at Mineral Street Bridge was discussed, also the appropriation for
Special Labor Account. The Board also called attention to the need
of extensive repairs on the bleachers used in the Park Department, and
felt that the amount asked forA5400, was actually needed.
The Board of Selectmen next appeared, Chm. Goodridge, Mr. Morton,
iIr. Fowle. Some of the budgets under the control or the Selectmen were
gone over especially Police Department Salaries. The Board explained
that the increase in the appropriation was to provide for two more men
on the regular force and for a clerk for the entire year.
No votes were taken at this meeting and the Clerk was instructed
to arrange to have the following appear at the next meeting February 7th:
Town Treasurer Library Trustees
Board of Assessors Cemetery Trustees
Board of Registrars Municipal Light Department
Adjourned 10.40 P.M.
Members present: Chm. Devaney, Connelly, Currell, Davis, Ellison, Folsom,
Goldsmith, Kimball, Newell, Noyes, Roberts, Sturges, Trevor, Long.
