Ad hoc MEMORIAL PARK USE REVIEW COMMITTEE MINUTES
September 13, 2004 at Town Hall Conference Room
Attendees: Gail Wood, Board of Selectmen
Frank Driscoll, Reading Youth Softball, Recreation Committee Member
Preston Lucus, Reading Youth Baseball
Rick Shaffer, Recreation Committee Member
John Feudo, Recreation Administrator
Guests: Davina Shuman
Meeting called to order at 7:48 PM.
F. Driscoll made a motion to accept the minutes of August 9th. R. Shaffer seconded the motion.
Motion passes 4-0-0 in favor of accepting the minutes.
P. Lucus went over the work plan that he had developed for the committee. He stated that he
basically used the charge to divide up the categories of tasks. P. Lucus received some feedback
from the committee on the work plan and some minor changes were made.
F. Driscoll mentioned that he met with both Ben Nichols and Sally Hoyt. F. Driscoll recommended
inviting both Ben and Sally to the next meeting to give the committee a historical sense of
Memorial Park. F. Driscoll stated that Sally Hoyt is the current president of the Reading Women's
Club. The Reading Women's Club used to schedule activities for Memorial Park
D. Shuman pointed out that it might be a good idea to bring in the Historical commission as well.
The committee seemed to agree.
R. Shaffer recommended taping the next meeting due to the historical nature. G. Wood stated that
Mr. Nichols does not like to be video taped, however he would be amendable to audio taping the
meeting.
R. Shaffer made a motion to Audio-tape the meeting of Sept 27th for historical purposes. F. Driscoll
secondedthe motion. Motion passes in favor of audio taping the next meeting 4-0-0. -

The Committee discussed how they would solicit information from Town Departments, Committees
and Abutters. P. Lucus recommended some type of questionnaire be developed. R. Shaffer
recommended developing one Global Community Questionnaire. The committee seemed to agree.

The committee discussed the next few meeting dates. The future meetings are set for 9/27, 10/12
and 10/25.
F. Driscoll made a motion to nominate Preston Lucus to serve as secretary of the ad hoc Memorial
Park Usage Review Committee. R. Shaffer seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor of Preston
Lucus holding the position of secretary of the ad hoc Memorial Park Usage Review Committee 4-0-
0. P. Lucus accepted the appointment.
The committee asked J. Feudo to find out from the Town Manager what the earliest date was that
they could appear on the Selectmen's agenda. The committee would like to get on the agenda
during the week of 11/8 if possible. J. Feudo stated he would find out and let the committee know.
Next the committee discussed which Town Departments, Committee and Commissions should be
solicited for the questionnaire. A lengthy discussion ensued. The Committee decided that they
would come up with one global questionnaire for DPW and Public Safety.
The Committee asked J. Feudo to list all activities that take place at Memorial Park over the past
few years.
F. Driscoll spoke about the research he has done on the heirs. He stated he did not find very much
information about any of them. He believes Sally Hoyt would be able to shed some light on this
area at the next meeting.
F. Driscoll stated he would invite both Ben Nichols and Sally Hoyt to the next meeting on Sept.
27t'.
J. Feudo reminded the committee that he would not be at the next meeting. He stated Program
Coordinator Dan McGrath would be at the meeting in his place to take notes and provide an audio
tape recorder. The meeting has already been posted.
P. Lucus asked the committee to begin thinking about ideas for the questionnaire for the next
meeting.
F. Driscoll made a motion to adjourn the meeting. R. Shaffer seconded the motion. Motion passes
in favor of adjournment 4-0-0.
