HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-10-07 School Council - Wood End Elementary MinutesWood End Elementary School School Council Meeting } L 5: 19 MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL October 7, 2010 A meeting of the Wood End School Council was held on Thursday, October 10, 2010 from 3:15pm to 4:35pm in the meeting room of Wood End Elementary School, Reading, Massachusetts. Council Members Present: Richard Davidson, Joanne King, Nancy Bentley, Sally Mucica, Monette Verrier, Jennifer Tesoro, and Debbie Hattery Also Present Were: Dr. John Doherty, Superintendent of Reading Public Schools Council Members Absent: Sharon Tango, parent member Call to Order Principal Davidson called the meeting to order at 3:20pm and Debbie Hattery recorded the minutes. A quorum of Council Members was present, and the meeting, having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with business. Welcome and Introductions Richard Davidson welcomed everyone to the meeting and reviewed the agenda Comments and Questions from the Superintendent Dr. John Doherty Richard Davidson introduced Superintendent Doherty and provided a summary of his long history in teaching and administration. Dr. Doherty provided a brief update on the start of the school year in the town of Reading. He announced that his primary purpose for attending the WE School Council meeting and other town School Council, PTO, school staff meetings was to connect with the school community and hear and learn from all of its stakeholders. Dr. Doherty asked the members present several questions in relation to the district in general and Wood End in particular concerning areas of strength and areas where the district could improve., He asked for ideas in areas where members felt the administration could improve its policies, protocols, and planning. Dr. Doherty announced that a general survey would be available to everyone in the parent community using a tool like survey monkey. The results of this listening tour and data from the surveys will be available in a report to be released by his office in January 2011 on Edline and at the January School Committee meeting. Dr. Doherty thanked everyone for his/her time and invited members to read his blog for more information. Review of the role of the School Council Mr. Davidson reviewed the MERA statute in 1993 that requires all schools to have a School Council. He handed out the Parents Place Bulletin and reviewed its contents. Davidson reiterated his desire for the parents to be partners with the school and said he looked forward to their input on the School Council. Review of the results of the Behavioral Health Survey Mr. Davidson handed out a Four Point Rating Scale showing the results of Behavioral Health Survey recently completed by School Council Members. The members discussed ratings for our current implementation level in each of the six areas of behavioral health measured by the survey. Members rated future implementation levels for the same six areas of behavioral health. Results of the survey and the discussion that ensued will be incorporated into the School Improvement Plan. Review of initial draft of the 2010-93 School Improvement Flan In the interest of time the discussion of the 2010-13 School Improvement Plan was tabled until the next meeting. Members were asked to submit their comments to Mr. Davidson via email no later than ,November 1, 2010. Co-Chair and Secretary positions open Mr, Davidson announced that both the co-chair and secretary positions were open and asked that anyone interested should contact him.
