A.M. Barrows School Council Minutes READING, MASS,
Monday, October 19, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 3:38 PM by Mrs. Callan. The minutes from the last
meeting on September 21, 2009 were reviewed and accepted by the council. Reports
were given by Mrs. Callan on the success of the first lockdown drill on Thursday October
15, 2009. The council was notified that there were minor issues that were a concern for
the fire/police present at the drill. The school will practice again in the spring.
In addition, Mrs. Callan gave an update on the Safety Committee's meetings, new safety
bag, and the plan for a 2010-2011 evacuation drill. Mrs. Hart reviewed aid grades recent
field trips to Parker Tavern and Plymouth Plantation. Mrs. DiGiovanni reviewed the
recent River as a Classroom field trip the 5th graders attended. Lastly, Mrs. Callan shared
that 2nd grades took a field trip to Concord.
Mrs. DiGiovanni updated the council on the October assembly which focused on caring
and friendship as well as an overview of November's upcoming Pennies for Peace
(courage and initiative) assembly. It was also reviewed that October is Walk to School
month. Each Wednesday in October the students are recognized for walking part-way or
the entire way to school as a part of our partnership with Safe Routes to School. Mrs.
Callan reminded the council that Friday October 23, 2009 will be the annual Monster
Mash. Also, Mrs. Hamlin discussed the plans for the upcoming school store which will
open October 28, 2009 and will run during lunch and after-school on Wednesdays to
benefit 5th grade end-of-year activities. Lastly, brief discussion on student council
elections which will take place on November 3id
Mrs. Callan then reviewed the 09-10 School Improvement Plan. We walked through the
17 goals for the year. She shared the curriculum, technology, data-driven, safety, and
school culture goals by giving an overview of the steps we need to take to accomplish
each. There was a discussion on parent communication through Edline and other related
technologies. Mrs. Callan also shared that the 09-10 budget for the year was frozen due to
9C cuts.
Mrs. Callan gave a reminder about picture day, Thursday October 22, 2009. She also
revealed that Pam Boston and Tricia Harbour will be attending the December Blue
Ribbon Conference.
The next meeting will be on Monday, November 16, 2009
