award for May.

7:30 p.m.

The minutes of the April 9, 1991 meeting were approved
4. May 25 Plastics Recycling
Anne Mark volunteered for plastics recycling duty for the
afternoon of May 25; Carol Edwards volunteered to cover the
morning of May 25. The Knights of Columbus volunteered for the
recycling duty on may 25, and there will be a training session
for the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, May 21.
5. Recycling Participation Survey
Anne Mark reported on the results of the l:aEL. recycling
survey. The overall participation rate was 700. Individual
street participation rates ranged from 26% to 100%. There were
some "bugs" in the completion of the survey. Some block leaders
only counted the number of bins on their street, rather than
house-specific participation. Also, there may have been problems
with respect to counting houses located on corner lots. This
survey may be repeated again in October. Anne mark will send out
copies of the survey. Ruth Cogan had suggested to Anne that it
would be good to get something in the paper about the survey.
Trish volunteered to do so and she will contact Ruth Cogan.
The discussion about encouraging recycling participation was
postponed.

6. Recycler of the Month for June
It was unanimously voted that the Rotary Club be designated
the June Recycler of the Month. Colonial Manor may be considered
in the future.
7. Battery Recycling
There was a brief discussion concerning battery recycling
issues. Don Anglehart and Debbie McCqJt# will begin to look at
battery recycling issues as an informal "Tubcommittee", including
researching possible legislative amendments encourage such
recycling. Stan Wirsig volunteered to call Wellesley officials
concerning their recycling program.
The Town car/truck battery collection date is June 22.
8. Composting
Debbie McCk4ley and Stan Winsig gave an excellent,
informative, and (with the exception of worm composting) tasteful
presentation on backyard composting. Both are now official
members of the Network of Home Composters, so they can conduct
training sessions. Debbie McC44fey is giving a composting
presentation on May 15, 1991 at Killam School.
Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner and DPW liaison Ted
McIntire, Jr. arrived at 8:50 p.m. during the composting
presentation. Ted and Peter had just come from a meeting with
residents living near the Town's compost area. Those residents
expressed concerns regarding odor and increased traffic. Ted
McIntire reviewed car count information that shows dramatically
increased use of the compost area throughout the year. Ted is
looking at options to mitigate both of the concerns voiced by the
neighbors.
9. Rubbish Rules and Regulations
The Selectmen will hold a public hearing on the trash fee,
either on June 11 or June 25.
The committee should be in a position to make recommendations
concerning the proposed revisions to the rubbish regulations
before those hearings, so our next meeting will be on Tuesday,
June 4, 1991.
10. Plastics Recycling
Sally Sabo made a motion, which was seconded by Steven
Thomases and passed unanimously, that the Committee adopt the
following position on plastics recycling:
Until alternatives can be found, there will be no
plastics recycling at the drop-off center after June 22,
1991.

Hiltz and the plastics recycler will be notified of the
