Minutes of meeting can 6/4/91 s
Employees, Lounge -w Town Hull
The meeting was called to order at 035 PM by Anne Mark.
Committee members in attendance were Steve Thomaseso Carol Edwards,
Trish Brigham, Don Anglehart, Sally Sabo,.,and Linda King. Also
in attendance were Ted McIntire yard, Susain Cohen.
The minutes of the May 14, 1991 meeting were approved with minor
corrections (Misspelling of name, participation survey
covered all curbside rec:yclablees not just plastics, and Ruth will
write article on participation survey results).
RECYCLER OF THE MONTH
The Rotary received the award for Junk. They. were' presented with
a $50 gift certificate from Atlantic Supermarket.
The Chamber of Commerce has i ndi c:at;.ed their wi l 1 i ngngess to
sponsor the program for another year, Assuming that this
included the months of duly and August, the 'Committee voted to
present the award for July to Colonial Manor. (If there is no
award during the summer months, Colonial Manor will be recipient
in September.)
The Committee also discussed recognizing Ruth Cagan for all her
efforts. 'T'ed suggested that the town's Employee Recognition
Award program might be an effective way of doing this. Ted and
Anne will look: into this and fill out appropriate paperwork.
Century 21 Realty in Reading offered their help for some future
Solid Waste project. 'They are not available on Saturdays.

TRASH REGULATIONS
The Committee discussed possible amendments to the regul ati tans,
including leaf composting, trash fee, bulk waste pick-up, weight
limit/container. The followigg-.c:hapges will be Vecommendedr
1. The leaf composting site should be open one weekend/month in
July and August and resume: weekly schedule can September 15.
2. The weight limit for containers picked up at curbside should
be 44 pounds, rather thin 80 pounds.
Anne will draft a memo to Peter Heick:enbl.pikner to communicate
these recommendations.
PLASTIC RECYCLING'
Susan Cohen is coordinating the June collection with the Rotary.
The Rotary has committed a suf f i cent number of vol unteear^•s.
Trish Brigham reported that the May collection went well.
However, a report an t.he,c:ol l ec.ti on has not yet been received
from bill Currier.
Carol Edwards suggested that the Committee discuss possiblities
f rrr retaining the plastics recycling after the June 22
collection. Anne mentioned that there were two people who had
approached her and expressed interest in spearheading an effort
Who that.
.After some discussion, the Committee decided that it would li!'ea,
to investigate the level of interest in town, for retaining the
program (and the willingness of a group to run the program).
Linda will contact Ruth and inform her of the Committee's
,sentiments. The Committee would like to see Ruth's forthcoming
newspaper article be upbeat and include a phone number/mail-in
firm for people to call or write in their interest in organizing
a -recycling effort and/or- their- willingness to pay, i e $1.00, for

glass/other- recyclable containers rather than plastic. ,
OTHER BUSINESS
Anne -opened up a discussion on the possible repurcussions of the
special election results. The Comi ttee discussed various issues
.related to this topic in light of the open meeting to be head on
Thursday, June 6. It was decided that Anne would be prepare=d to
reiterate the Committee's support for the continuation of
curbside recycling. Anne will use facts communicated to the
Selectmen in an earlier letter (composed by she and Sally) to
support this stance.
Two Reading mi ddl e•-• chool ers have expressed interest in a town-
wide Clean-up Day. , Peter We=i ck:enbl ei k:ner suggested to the
students, that they, plan something in conjunction with Earthy Day
1992. The Committee will invite the students to one of its
meetings to present their ideas. After the presentation, the
Committee will discuss the extent of its involvement in such a
project.
Assuming curbside recycling persists, Linda, Susan, Sally„ Trish
and Anne wvi l l for•cn a se.cbcommi ttee whose purpose will be the
organization Wan ',pcycl ing event "for° October, 1991. The
event will celebrate the year annivprsary of the advent of
curbside recycling in Reading.
Linda King and Ste=ve Thomases applied for re-appointment to the
Committee. Theis current: terms expire at the end of June, At
the July meeting t:h'te:a Committee will review the convenience of its
meeting night. If deemed necessary, it may also hold an election
for- a new Chairperson and/or Vice-Chairperson.
