The regular meeting of the Solid Waste Commit~ee came to order at
7:40 pm on July 8, 1992 in the Conference. Room- 'of-Town Hall.
Present at the meeting were members Linda King, Steve Thomases,
Anne Mark, Carol Edwards, Sally Sabo Bob Brown and staff Ruth
Cogan and Ted McIntire.
King nominated Sally Sabo as Chair. Sabo declined. Motion was
made by Steve, seconded by Edwards to nominate Mark as Chair.
She accepted with the understanding that it is an administrative
role and the Vice Chair does the presentations in front of the
Board of Selectmen and Town Meeting. Motion passed 6:0:0. King
nominated Sabo as Vice Chair, seconded by Thomases. Motion
carried 6:0:0.
The June minutes were done in two parts by Brigham and Cohen.
McIntire noted that he has not received the part from Cohen at
this time. The minutes were deferred to the next meeting.
It was noted that George Hines is the new Selectmen liason to the
Department of Public Works and the Solid Waste Committee.
Recycler of the MonthIt was discussed. It was decided that the
Committee would wait until there was a worthy nominee rather than
automatically naming someone every month. It was also decided
that the members would rotate being in the picture.
Reports: Bob Brown gave a report on the the activities of the
Reading Recycles Plastics group. He noted that they are inves-
tigating alternative vendors but will be staying with Waste
Management for at least the next two months. In June they col-
lected $315 and 1.91 tons of plastics over two months. A general
meeting to recruit new members is planned for September 17.
A discussion was held concerning the phone book recycling and
junk mail reduction project. Cogan said that she would contact
Elder Services Director Lois Bond about senior volunteers. She
also said that she would take care of publicity in the newspapers
and making up the sheets to be distributed at the drop off.
Cogan gave a report on the Tire and Battery Collection noting
that 185 batteries were collected and 1100 tires. Edwards noted
that she is "waiting patiently" for her article to appear in the
Chronicle about paper recycling.
Mark noted that the library project is well on track. All.the
information is back and needs to be organized and returned to the
library.
Cogan noted that the Town Hall/Library white paper recycling
project is renewed with Laidlaw but at a cost of $20 per pick up
per location.
King noted the response from Cerratanis about the Recycler of the
Month mix up.
McIntire noted that an application has been submitted for a grant
for a tub grinder.
White goods pick up - Trish Brigham, Edwards and Sabo offered to
help update the list given to the public, including adding the
Kidney Foundation to it.
MRF visit - Cogan, Mark and Brown said that they would be going
on the field trip to Hooksett, NH to see BFI's MRF.
Sabo said that she would investigate what would be involved in
going in front of the Board of Selectmen concerning the possible
regional MRF for this area.
McIntire noted that DEP will be monitoring the waste bans but
will not turn away waste loads until 1994.
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 pm on a motion by Edwards and
seconded by Thomases.
