ATTENDEES: Bob Brown, Ted McIntire, Indira Balkissoon, Lynda Zar-
row, Anne Mark, Sally Sabo, Joe Tarantino, Martha Moore.
1. Call to order.
2. Minutes from October were approved with two corrections
(capitalize He and change Easter to Eastern).
3. Selectperson's Meeting held on October 25, 1994: Joe Taran-
tino, Ted McIntire, Anne Mark, Bob Brown and Martha Moore at-
tended this meeting. Anne Mark demonstrated the Brave New Com-
poster. A list of the SWAG accomplishments were handed out at
the meeting. At this meeting the SWAC members summarized Mr.
Doucette from the MADEP's visit. The Selectpeople said that the
SWAG was doing a good job. The role of the SWAC with regard to
incineration was also discussed in terms of how the SWAC should
advise the Selectpeople. The short-term vs. the long-term impact
of incineration was also discussed. The SWAC role should be to
provide the criteria to select incineration and the pros and
cons. The SWAC should not give a recommendation. The SWAC will
continue to make reports to the Selectpeople and provide input
into the selection process.
4. Grants: a) Bob Brown made a motion that the DPW apply for a
MADEP education grant. This motion was unanimously approved.
The grant due date is November 15. Ted McIntire had already
begun working on the grant and was ready to mail it out upon SWAC
approval. b) Bob Brown made a motion that the DPW apply for the
Brave New Composter grant. The question was raised whether or
not Reading should continue to sell the composters for $32 or for
$20 as other Towns do. Ted McIntire thinks Reading could sell
the composters at the lower price. The question was raised as to
how many composters should be requested in the grant. The SWAC
approved a motion for the DPW to apply for 50 Composters. The
way the composter grant works Reading will start with 50 com-
posters and the number of composters will decrease with each
round of composter purchases. The next time the composters are
bought, Reading will buy 20 less composters or 30 composters, the
next round Reading will purchase 10 less composters or 20 etc.
Until the grant money is used up.
5. Button battery report: Lynda Zarrow wrote an article about
button batteries for Reading Notes. It has been noted that the
button battery bins are not filling,up. Suggestions were made to
include a statement about button batteries in the proposed BNC
flyer. Also, a suggestion was made to call CVS and ask about
button batteries. Hersey's and Simms have a recycling program of
their own. A suggestion was made to place a placard near in the
area where the button batteries are sold to remind people to
recycle and button battery collection locations. Both CVS and
Johnson's have placed the button battery recycling box in the
same area as batteries are displayed.
