Berger Room, Town Hall Annex
Wednesday, January 11, 1995
Attendees: Indira Balkissoon, Bob Brown, Ruth Cogan Clay, Ted McIntire, Martha Moore, Lynda Zarrow.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30. The December minutes were unanimously approved as amended.
Bob reported that he collected a little less than 2/10 of a pound in button batteries (none from the DPW or Town
Hall). CVS has lost their box, and Bob will procure a replacement.
Bob stated that he talked to Pat Scanlon, the contact person regarding collection of rechargeable batteries. This
project is being run in conjunction with MassRecycle. Bob learned that the company pays for the postage to return
full boxes of batteries, and that larger chains would be contacted directly. Our role will consist of working with
smaller establishments in Reading, and trouble-shooting at any of the local bigger chains. Since neither Woburn nor
Stoneham had responded to Pat Scanlon's inquiry, and many Reading residents shop in those towns, Martha has
volunteered to act as liaison for Redstone Shopping Center and Woburn Mall should problems occur.
Bob plans to attend the NSRRC meeting on January 12.
The library circulation box, in the Barkley Bishop History Room, is working out well. Indira compiled a list of the
contents from November. Once all SWAC members had an opportunity to read the material, Indira will clean out
the box of outdated material (during February).
Ted reported that a meeting was scheduled for January 19 to discuss the incinerator contract bids. He has heard
nothing about our grant status.
Topics of articles for future issues of Readin Notes were identified. Bob is completing an article for January that
instructs people to disregard the smaller issues related to recycling (i.e. cardboard not picked up, plastic numbers 3 -
7 not recycled) and to simply focus on recycling. The February issue is dedicated to the Annual Report, so we will
not be submitting an article. Indira will write an article for March, and will contact Peter Hechenbleikner about his
interest in preparing something for the April Reading Notes. She will ask him to summarize, for the general
population, the piece he's writing for the Selectmen about Reading's water supply.
Ruth and Martha will work together to obtain bids for collecting white paper from Town offices. Ruth will provide
Martha with any documentation she has regarding current volume. Martha will use this data to obtain telephone
bids. If bids are not available over the phone, Ruth will submit written requests using the list ofpossible vendors
that Martha will provide at our next meeting.
Indira will call the RECYCLE hotline to check the accuracy of information about Reading, and will determine how
to correct any inaccuracies she may find.
Bob was contacted by Linda King regarding a former Recycler of the Month who received a gift certificate in
March 1993 that was not recently honored due to the time elapsed since issuance. We agreed that the recipient
should not have expected it to be honored, and will not follow up with. the retailer.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
