SWAC Public Education Campaign Subcommittee p '97
January 27, 1997; 284 Summer Avenue FEB 14 f
Members Present - Kay Clark, Jean Krogh, Lynda Zarrow, Carol Nelson, Anne Mark
Anne called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.
Carol announced that Osco has agreed to a drop-off bin being placed at their new location!
Carol will contact Jonathan Edwards to get a copy of the site plan so SWAC can determine the
best location for the container. Carol will provide Osco with exact details regarding size and
color of the container, how often it will be emptied, what will go in it, etc. Carol will also contact
Ted McIntire to determine if we have the funds available for renting the container and its
removal. _
If we do not, one alternative would be to apply for a DEP grant.
Anne heard from Nichole Cirillo that REAPS money is still available. Anne will contact Dorothy
Suppit at Mass Recycle to find out exactly what that money covers. She will then contact Martha
Moore and possibly other school administrators to determine their level of interest for this
program.
Nichole also informed Anne that we will be notified of future recycling coordinator training
opportunities.
SWAC Educational Campaign Agenda
After much discussion, we decided not to wait until June to start our education campaign so it
could tie in with the State campaign. Instead, we will spend the next 4 months preparing for a
Community Day Kick-Off that would focus on reducing, reusing, and buying recycled. Then in the
fall, we would tackle the recycling portion of our education goals; with the help of the State
campaign.
Ideas for the Community Day Kick-Off include:
• announcing the drop-off location and ribbon-cutting date
• placing sandwich boards around Town with "rah-rah" messages
• publicizing the fact that the plates, cups, etc. being used at Community Day are
made of recycled materials
• using the green recycle bins from DPW, and the Reading Recycles banners
• work with the media and the Community Day planners to get our message
publicized in the Chronicle and Northwest Weekly
• inform the community about Mass PIRG and its role in helping to reduce packaging
We also came up with ideas for Earth Day (April 22):
• run videos on the cable channel
• place the green recycle bins Downtown with "April 22 is Earth Day" signs
• publicize both items in the Chronicle and Suburban News
Anne pointed out that we need to get the Chamber of Commerce involved with our "buy
recycled" portion of the campaign. She recommended enlisting Debbie McCulley as a SWAC
champion when communicating with local businesses during such times as the monthly breakfast
meetings and in the newsletter. Carol also recommended contacting Ann Marie Brennick, at
RMLD who is a Chamber of Commerce member, to solicit her feedback and encourage her to
support our mission.
' Lynda contacted the Reading phone book publisher who agreed to include our information the
next time the phone book was printed.
Jean with work with Anne to come up with a summary brochure (Reading Green Pages) listing
various drop-off sites for materials such as rags, plastic 3-7, oil, etc. We need to confirm with
Ted that costs associated with printing this brochure will be covered by Waste Management.
Lynda recommended recruiting the older generation to provide testimonials of how they used to
reuse and reduce when they were growing up. Several ideas were discussed on how to
disseminate this information, but nothing was finalized.
