Staff member: Ted McIntire 1. The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. Minutes from the June 11 meeting were approved as amended. 2. Organization Jackie Chipman nominated Bob Brown to remain Chair of the Committee. The nomination was seconded by Jean Krogh. The committee voted 6-0-1 for Bob Brown as Chair. Jackie Chipman nominated Kay Clark to remain Vice Chair of the Committee. The nomination was seconded by Anne Mark. The committee voted 6-0-1 for Kay Clark as Vice Chair. Jean Krogh nominated Anne Mark to remain Chair of the Unit Pricing/Education Subcommittee. Kay Clark seconded this nomination. The committee voted 6-0-1 for Anne Mark as subcommittee Chair. 3. Jennifer Culbert was welcomed as an official committee member and' Lynda Zarrow was -nngratulated on beginning her second term. All members were reminded about the conflict of terest material previously distributed, and encouraged to attend future presentations on this subject. 4. Continuation of User Fee/Education. - Action Plan Jackie handed out minutes from the July 1 subcommittee meeting, and Anne provided a verbal, summary of the meeting. Anne indicated that the State educational effort is expected to be delayed, and that we should instead tie any events to Massachusetts Recycles Day (November 15). We discussed using the Block Leader program in our educational effort for such tasks as educating neighbors, distributing black stickers, encouraging 100% recycling participation, increasing the number of materials recycled, stressing reduction/composting/buying recycled. Lynda volunteered to compile a list of current Reading residents from old block leader listings. A subcommittee meeting was set for July 28 at Anne Mark's residence. This subcommittee will determine topics and authors of future Reading Notes articles (i.e. informing- readers of the library folder, recruiting Block Leaders). 5. Annual Report to BOS The committee reviewed the edited document created by Anne and Jean from. Bob Brown's original. draft. It will be submitted to the Board. Reports and Comments • Bob provided Jean with information on the Building Materials Resource Center, which she will place in the library folder. • Recycling Education Assistance to Public Schools (REAPS) Program for Reading Schools: Anne noted she spoke to REAPS contact Richard Davidson (Birch Meadow Principal). He expressed interest, but wants to talk to the teachers in the fall. He has the REAPS application, but asked for an education proposal (including a written request for the recycling truck visit). Anne will ask Martha Moore for suggestions on writing this proposal. • Bob distributed library material for members to read. 7. Information Bob will attend the NSRRC meeting which will include 2 speakers about computer recycling. 8. Old Business A request for the Recycling Truck Visits will be presented in our educational proposal to the schools regarding REAPS. We will postpone the discussion of a Drop-off Center for Recyclables until after the police station changes are finalized. Ted will have the new banner hung upstairs in Town Hall and have the old one moved downstairs. We discussed adding fluorescent lamps to the HHW Collection. Ted noted we have a three year contract with Clean Harbors to conduct the HHW collection. Anne has a memo (from Essex County Cooperative) stating that Clean Harbors would add pick up of fluorescent lamps to their collection at no cost. New Business Alection of trash from condominiums will begin in July 1998. Reading Notes is back! Articles should be submitted to Cheryl Johnson (942-9047) one month before publication. Jean will call Cheryl for the next deadline date. Anne, Jackie and Jennifer will obtain WasteCap information from Debbie McCulley so that SWAC members can contact area churches about interest in WasteCap. 10. Next Meeting August 13. 11.
