HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-04-13 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING MEETING APRIL 13, 1992 BERGER CONFERENCE ROOM 16 LOWELL STREET READING MA 01867 Present: Mary Andreola, Virginia Bizzarro, Gladys Cail, Leonard Dergay, Dorothy Foxon, Eva Hakanson, Linda Nordberg, Loretta Spaulding, Irving Stackpole, Lois Bond The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by Vice Chairperson Loretta Spaulding. Minutes of the March meeting were accepted on a motion by,Dorothy Foxon and seconded by Virginia Bizzarro. 9-0-0 The Financial Report was accepted on a motion by Irving Stackpole and seconded by Gladys Cail. 9-0-0 Director's Report was accepted on a motion by Eva Hakanson and seconded by Mary Andreola 9-0-0. The 1991 statistical report was shared with the Council. Format suggestions included rounding up numbers, using larger print and 'developing an annual report for- mat by category with explanatory notes. Irving Stackpole, Chair of the Senior Center Advisory Committee, reviewed the elevation renderings from Catlin and Associates noting the following: West Elevation: insert of new bay doors with an exit door to the .:__J patio; Reading Historical Commission's concern with the amount of glass in the doors North Elevation: new windows replicating the one original window on the North side East Elevation: means of emergency egress South Elevation: potential garden area Loretta Spaulding spoke of the perception among some seniors that the design of the new center is not sensitive to their needs, specifically the lack of bathrooms on the first floor. An intense discussion followed centering on the national building code re- quiring the installation of two handicapped bathrooms, the amount of floor space used by the installation of bathrooms, the program impact with a smaller meeting space in the multipurpose room, and how the Advisory Committee reached their decision. Mr. Stackpole said he would again bring the issue before the Advisory Committee and the project managers. The Board of Selectmen will endorse a proclamation honoring the Elder Services volunteers on April 14. The proclamation will be read at the Volunteer Reception on May 13.
