HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-05-10 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING MAY 10, 1993 BERGER CONFERENCE ROOM 16 LOWELL STREET READING, MA 01867 Present: Mary Andreola, Gladys Cail, Dot Foxon, Ginny Lane, Eva Hakanson, Linda Nordberg, Irving Stackpole, Loretta Spaulding, Sal Mele, Sally Hoyt, Lois Bond Absents Len Dergay The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by Chairperson Ir- ving Stackpole in the Berger Conference Room. Minutes of the April 12, 1993, meeting were accepted as amended on a motion by Ginny Lane and seconded by Dot Foxon. 7-0-0 Sal Mele arrived. The Financial Report was accepted on a motion by Dot Foxon and seconded by Ginny Lane. 8-0-0 The Director's Report was accepted on a motion by Ginny Lane and seconded by Eva Hakanson. 8-0-0 Gladys Cail reported on the Reading Housing Authority Task Force which is assessing housing needs to prevent the premature.place- ment of elders in nursing homes. Ginny Lane and Mary Andreola will work on a task force to explore availability of elder day for Reading residents. Work on the heating unit in the attic of the Senior Center will commence the week of May 17. The Town's consultant worked with the architect and contractors and determined that the unit can be repaired. The Center will be landscaped using the "Adopt-a-Bush" plan similiar to the "Adopt-an-Island" developed by DPW. Bond will reproduce the landscape plan which evolved during the construc- tion period. Sally Hoyt and Ginny Lane will ask nurseries to loan bushes to help people visualize the kinds of shrubbery needed for the Center. The plan and the bushes will be displayed beginning with the May 15th Library Open House walking tour which will in- clude the Senior Center. Irving Stackpole and Sal Mele will be COA hosts at the Center on May 15. Liaison Reports: Patrons: no report Golden Aaers: Loretta Spaulding presented the attached proposal as a means of coordinating activities. After discussion Dot Foxon moved and Linda Nordberg seconded a motion that senior group leaders coordinate their activities through a monthly calendar of senior activities maintained at the Elder Services Office. 8-0-0 Cracker Barrel: Mary Andreola announced Dan Ensminger was a guest at Cracker Barrel on April 29. The lack of exterior door security at Tannerville was discussed. As a result of COA discus- Sion, Irving Stackpole will write a letter to the Reading Housing Authority sharing the Board's concern about building security. The following people will be on the Nominating Committee which will present a slate of officers at the June meeting: Loretta Spaulding, Gladys Cail, Mary Andreola, and Irving Stackpole ex- officio. Bond will prepare information for the committee. Discussion of fund raising plans will be on the June agenda. Ginny Lane raised the question of a disabled person purportedly being denied access to the van. Bond will investigate. The van has in the past transported disabled residents. Appreciation was expressed to Sally Hoyt for her presence at the meeting. Ms Hoyt said she is kept informed through the COA pack- ets she receives and hopes to be able to attend future meetings. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. which was moved by Eva Hakanson and seconded by Gladys Cail. 8-0-0 Respectfully submitted, Lois K. Bond
