George Hines is the Board of Selectmen's liaison to the Council on Aging. Mr. Hines talked about the senior citizen tax work program that was introduced to the Selectmen in the Spring of 1995. Discussion points included: applicants submitting resumes to match appropriate skills with the Town's needs; sensitivity to employees so there is no sense of "job replacement"; use of a voucher system to eliminate paper work; part time projects to be done that full time permanent employees "can never get to"; older citizens want to'augment income by working but encounter age discrimination in the work place. Mr. Hines stated the Selectmen frequently have projects but the Town does not have the staff time to complete the request. He envisions the senior tax project as an assist to the Selectmen. The subject will come before the Selectmen tomorrow night. It is the consensus of the COA that program materials clearly inform applicants that vouchers would be used so participants would not anticipate receiving cash. Doris Fantasia talked about Mystic Valley Elder Services and the programs offered to the eight communities within it's mandate. 163 Reading residents are currently MVES clients either through Meals on Wheels, home makers, respite care, home health aides and/or case management.
