HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-10 Council on Aging MinutesCOUNCIL ON AGING February 10, 1997 Berger Room Town Hall 16 Lowell Street Reading, MA 01867-2684 Present: Mary Andreola, Gladys Cail, Betty Cronin, Mary Mundjer, Ellen O'Hara, Gay Williams, Lois Bond Excused: Naaz Page, Dottye Foxon, Joanne Wooldridge Guests: Joe Connelly, Recreation Administrator, Jackie Chipman, Reading Aquatics Center Study Group The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. by Chairperson Mary Andreola. Minutes of the January 13, 1997 meeting were accepted on a motion by Gay Williams and seconded by Gladys Cail. 6-0-0 Financial report was reviewed and accepted on a motion by Betty Cronin and seconded by Gay Williams. 6-0-0 Administrator's report was moved by Betty Cronin and seconded by Gladys Cail 6-0-0 Joe Connelly attended the meeting to discuss areas where Recreation and Elder Services can compliment each other. He said programming covers 4-8 year olds, teens, adults and family activities. 50% of adults in golf activities are seniors. Trips organized by Recreation include North Shore to see the Christmas Carol, New York City and Foxwood. "All comers Meet" is a track event for people over age 50. Board members gave many suggestions for trips that could be organized by Recreation and enjoyed by senior citizens. Jackie Chipman attended the meeting to discuss the study conducted by the Aquatics Center Study Group. The group started in 1994. A survey has been distributed and the tabulated results to date indicate 409 responders want an indoor swimming pool and 2 responders do not want an indoor swimming pool. Members asked about the Ethel Grant Fund: is there money remaining and how can it be spent. Members discussed the activities and times when seniors could use the facility. The survey will be distributed at the Center. Concern was raised about senior clubs that are having difficulty remaining viable. The Golden Agers Club is about to close. The Tannerville Club is changing its format in the hopes of encouraging attendance. Betty Cronin has a contact at the Vocation Technical School for cosmetology students looking for people interested in their services. Resp ctfully ubmitted: ~1 ois K. Bon
