HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-10-06 Council on Aging MinutesCouncil on Aging October 6, 1997 Berger Room Town Hall 16 Lowell Street Reading, MA 01867-2684 Present: Mary Andreola, Gladys Cail, Beth Moore, Mary Mundjer, Ellen O'Hara, Gay Williams, Joanne Wooldridge, Lois Bond Excused: Betty Cronin, Dottye Foxon, Guests: Sally Hoyt Chairperson Mary Andreola called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. Beth Moore was welcomed to the Council. Sally Hoyt distributed material and discussed The Silver Haired Legislature's "Day on the Hill" event. She also distributed copies of A Guide for Elders, edited by the Gerontology Institute and Center of the University of Massachusetts Boston. Minutes of the September 8, 1997 meeting were approved on a motion by Gay Williams and seconded by Gladys Cail. 7-0-0 O'Hara left. The Financial Report was reviewed and approved a motion by Gladys Cail and seconded by Joanne Wooldridge. 6-0-0 The Administrator's Report was reviewed and approved on a motion by Gladys Cail and seconded by Joanne Wooldridge. 6-0-0 The results of the Shopping Assistance Coordinator's client survey were presented to the Board. Overall reaction to the program is very positive and the responsiveness of the shopping volunteers is greatly appreciated. The RAD program for older Reading women was discussed. The schedule has been set for six sessions beginning Oct. 30 and ending Nov. 20. The Police Department's trained instructors have modified the classes for this training. The discussion of succession of officers is postponed. The COA Mission Statement was reviewed and discussed. Consensus is to retain the current statement. There was an extensive discussion of how the COA would respond to bequests. It was determined that responsible guidelines were necessary indicating carefully planned expenditures in order for people to consider gifts to the Council. Determining the needs of the older population will lay the groundwork for the guidelines. A study group will be formed to assess those needs. Preliminary topics could include day care, concern for the hidden elders, personal medical services at the Center. Joanne Wooldridge and Mary Andreola asked to be on the study group.
