September 19,1996
CIAS met at 7:30pm at Joshua Eaton Elementary School. Present at the meeting were
Tom Green, Cathy Martin, Carol Grimm, Peter Hechenbleinker and Bill McSheedy,
Principal.
We toured both the old and new part of the building. We noted in the old section that the
windows had been replaced but only the walls with new windows were repainted. The
other three walls in the classroom had original paint. As we entered the new section of the
building the new principal pointed out the poor location of the new bathrooms. There is
little supervision on this particular hallway and McSheedy showed us some vandalism in
the boys bathroom. Overall McSheedy indicated the maintenance in the building has
improved since he became principal in July.
The renovated part of the building is attractive. The effort to preserve the character of the
old structure was noted. Some issues remain: the gym roof leaks and has ruined the gym
floor, the clock tower is leaking and the clock does not work, some flooring in the old
section of the building needs to be replaced and old classrooms need to be painted.
We returned to the principal's office and Peter highlighted for us some of the issues we
will see addressed in the Capital Plan he intends to give us at our next meeting. Peter
indicated he is going to try to increase curb and sidewalk work (at least combine the two
accounts), increase engineering personnel and a need to address some playground safety
issues raised by the Town's insurance carrier.
