CIAS met at Ipm in the Superintendent's office. Present at the meeting were Robin
D'Antona, Carol Grimm, Dr. Harutunian, Cathy Martin and Nate White.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the $9million Coolidge Middle School project.
We were informed the School Committee had turned the project over to the School
Building Committee and is expecting a recommendation in January. At that time, the
School committee will take a final vote.
We spent time discussing the Middle School model and why Coolidge had originally been
viewed as a 450 student school and capacity is now 370. The Middle School team model,
the introduction of foreign language into 7th and 8th grade (eventually 6th) and the
increasing special needs space has all had an impact on the school's capacity. We have
known for sometime the media center, the front office and the staff facilities were
undersized. The science labs are also inadequate and the art room is not handicap
accessible.
We concluded it is best to wait until the School Building Committee has completed its
review of the project, taken a final vote and presented to the School Committee and they
have taken a formal position on the project. At that point, a tour and presentation on the
Coolidge project would be appropriate.
