Also Attending: Ray Couture, legal counsel (Arnold Berger and Shirley Buzderewicz were not present.) I. CALL TO ORDER Paul Sweeney called the meeting to order at 7:03 PM. II. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS REETING It was voted to accept the Minutes of the April 10, 1990 meeting of the Corporation as presented. III. COMMUNICATIONS A. Resignation of Arnold Berger It was with regrets that the Corporation voted to accept the resignation of Arnold Berger as a Director of Reading's 350th, Inc. We will miss his input as well as his humor. B. Reading Community Carnival Committee Susan Horn attended a meeting held May S, 1990. The Reading Carnival Committee has been set up to run the July event that has previously been run by the Y's Men. Bill Lavoie is the General Chairman. The goal of the committee is to sponsor, for the Community, ar professional carnival (Rockwell Entertainment) for three nights (6-10) and one day (10-10) in early July. In addition to the carnival there will be a fireworks display on Saturday night at 10:00. Organizations throughout the community are welcomed to set up booths or activities either on an informational basis or as fund raisers for themselves. The Committee hopes to have a town- wide out-door supper in conjunction with the Carnival, but this is still'in the planning stages. There will be no Battle of the Bands this year. Page 3 Reading's 350th, Inc. May 15, 1990 The fund raising of this committee is to actually pay for the carnival expenses and, down the road, to accumulate enough money to complete a community project such as putting a shell on the band stand in Memorial Park, covering the Grant Pool or some other project. One of their fund raisers will probably be a Community Supper at the Carnival. They may ask for an advance from organizations participating in the Carnival to get the dinner off the ground and they will be paid back. Volunteers will be needed to serve the meal. The meal will not be elaborate this year, but a clam bake in future years might be a possibility. They want to vlork with the 350th to create a very special event in 1994. Many of the ideas presented in Alan Fould's Grand Expo ideas are already taking place or germinating within this Committee. Susan felt that discussion of a 1994 Grand Expo should take place in close coordination with this group, if not within this group, so we don't steal their thunder and we reap the benefit of their on-going expertise. it was voted that Reading's 350th participate this year in the Carnival to be held July 11-14. We would like to look into borrowing a gazebo from North Reading lumber as our booth. We might also have a blow-up of an old print (maybe borrow the print in the corridor of the Town Hall) and sell the remaining'123 sets of postcards in Paul Sweeney's inventory. We don't want to jump the gun by offering shirts or hats this year. The booth will be more instructional. We need to check with 'North Reading Lumber (Bill Strout) about borrowing a gazebo. We also talked about some musical offering as well to attract interest and entertain passers- by. Ken Latham will find out what the transition was from Reading Y's Men running the carnival to this Carnival committee. Is it a Town committee? We need to be appraised of new Town Committees being set up that could come under the jurisdiction of the 350th. ww Paul Sweeney will represent the 350th at the Reading Community Carnival Committee next time. They will put two liners in for fillers to-advertise the postcards. Paul Sweeney stressed that any article MUST have the address to which donation can be made. VI. NEW BUSINESS A. Pottery at Hitching Post (Reading Est. 1639) The date refers to the settling of Reading. Perhaps we can contact the manufacturer directly about a special 1994 version. Ken 'suggested that we not commit to a full blown line of products but try a test run of, say, 50 mugs, if we decide to use these people. We also do not want to compete with anyone else in town. Does the Hitching Post have a monopoly on this line of pottery? They also produce an annual Reading Christmas tree ball sold only at the Hitching Post. B. Countdown Caps - Hats counting down to the 350th are at Eugene's (#346 is currently available for $11.00). C. Porcelain coffee mugs from Nelson Marketing are $2.10 each complete. Susan Horn will bring a sample and information next meeting. D. Marf-O-Gram - Paul Sweeney visited Marf-O-Gram and saw what they could offer for hats and Tee Shirts. VII. Dick Stolt s ECorrection. Stosez3 Reading Post Office Representing Postmaster Tack: Driscoll, Dick: presented an idea for a Pictorial Cancellation that would be offered for philatelic purposes. There is no cast for producing the hand-starr,p or for manning a temporary mail station on a specific date (probably May 29, 1994). Collectors would then obtain the pictorial stamp at the temporary station or by mail order received prier to the date of the cancellation. The postal service needs a ten week: lead time to produce the starriha from finished artwork: we would provide. The cachet envelopes that collectors go for could be a money maker for the 350th. Everett Blodgett has several cachet type envelopes especially one th<::.kt was produced with an envelope with a picture of Lake O .tannapowi tt on it. He will bring it in to show next time. Ed Palmer will also bring some of the First Day covers lie is collecting for his grandson set we can get an idea of what these look like. Doris Fantasia had indicated that if they had enough lead time they could put a certain amount of travel money each year until 1994. Since then, at the April 24th meeting of the Board of Selectmen, a letter inviting Reading, England was presented for approval, approved and signed by Russ Graham. It was then forwarded to Alan Foulds for his signature. The Town Manag^=r, Peter Heck:enbleichner, should be made.: aware that all communication go through the Chair and MUST go through the chair. Items relating to the 350th cannot simply appear on the Selectffl•=:nes agenda with no opportunity for a member of our Committee to be there for discussion. The Steering Committee voted to endorse and send the letter of invitation to Reading, England. IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS A. -3-5-0t-h-, Ing, (Paul Sweeney) 1. Reading Community Carnival The Corporation voted to participate in the July 11-14, 1990 Reading Community Carnival. (formerly run by the Y's Men). They are going to try to borrow a gazebo from North Reading Lumber as the booth and sell postcards to raise find for the 350th celebration. 2. Don Young, the photographer from the "Daily Times Chronicle", will meet them at Coolidge Middle School at 10:30 AM, at which time the checks will formally be passed over. Anyone on the Steering Committee is welcome to be there. T 2. Letterhead Susan W. will also ask: Judy about designing a letterhead, envelope and a newsletter masthead. 3. Rotary Quilt Square As was approved at a previous meeting, the Rotary Club was authorized to use the logo to create a 6" quilt square for the Rotary Club National Guilt. Lois Bond executed it and, according to Susan Flannery, it was "beautiful beyond my wildest dreams". If it is available we should try to get a photo of it for our rt":cords. Paine 4 4 Steering Committee May 15, 19`.0 4s Depository of Articles Generated Using 350 Logo We should have a central depository of tht:: items we generate. The Antiquarian Society deals with objects and should probably be the ones te:::+ accumulate this, but this whole topic will have t be discussed further at .a later date, meanwhile, anything generated should be kept by Committee members. D. Glg l_1: (Barbara C'(+.°:oney thru Susan Theophani Susan Thy>ophani.s reported that Beth Anderson does not want to be the intermediary on the quilt, which will be handled by the Reading Soviet of Craftsman. Susan T. them talked with Barbara Dancey, President of the Craftsman. Their Council met: and decided that they do not wash to sponsor a project, but individual members within their- group, probably under than .leadership of Barbara Mooney (27 Poneworthi Street, Stoneham, 438--2427), would be willing to participate. Susan T. told Barbara 1Ni+-:+oney that Susan Whel tl e would be her liaison. Susan Flannery said that the Library would be interested in displaying the quilt on a temporary and possibly a permanent basis. She also suggested that a second quilt be crafted that could be raffled off. Lu Qr'lL::tr Twvtnn Ng%itlj (Beth's Anderson thru Susan Theophanis) Susan Theophani.s reported that Beth is deciding whether to do the front room or the complete Parker- Tavern. She will take measurements in the Spring„ If she does the front room, it will be furnished. F. iP'srat_ierv IEfogibi lity QyTit.tff (A+lan Foulds) Alan has tried, repeatedly, to contact John Shaw, who is heading up the Committee. John is out--going President of the Lions Club and it probably very busy wrapping u`.a his tern, in office. Ed Palmer reported that Judge Jack: Sweeney has expressed an interest in being on this study committee. He is a U.S. circuit judge in Boston and is also the President of the University of Massachusetts Alumni Association and feels he could get the U.Mass_. band to march for no charge. Alumni in the area would house and feed there, (there are 175 band The information presented by Sturbridge to the:.. Further,. there are other problems in Reading: we do not have a good street 1ayc+t..!'t for a parade route, we cannot decide on a day Page Steering Committee May 15, 1990 of the week: that will not, alienate some faction of the Town, weather is an unpredictable fart:org and, of ,„o trsey cost is to factor. We also don't know what the economic picture will be down the road Paul Sweeney, who is the official liaison to the Parade Feasibility Committee, requested that he be replaced in that capacity citing that he is not sold can a parade at this time and his bias might impact on his responsibility to act as liaison. Ed Palmer will replace Paul in that capacity. Ed will act are liaison to the Parade Feasibility Committee and express our concerns and a time-frame within which we expect them to report back: to R.ts (by the October meeting) We should also assist them with the names of the parade" chairmen in the communities we have already contacted about their celebrations, of which there are sc,nte thirty of so. l F Hints_,ris_ Ph'.!'t29r'a.hi Qli'ri'iit_ttt (Ed Palmer) The Histori cal Commission is considerin g going to the Arts, Council for funds: to make prints from t he glass negatives Ed has been wo rking with and collecting. This first would be distributed on a broad scale, perhaps using inserts in the SL.tburbnn tN2VI (which we now understand is re=ferred to as the "Cheese Stare Paper") or the Reading Municipal Light bills. Every newsletter we produce should look the same and have a masthead using s::ur logo. Our first edition should go out in September, but Susan F. will have a rough draft available for content: by the next meeting. The Library now has desktop publishing and a laser printer. Print Shack has offered to run off 00 at no cost, but we are more t r likely going to rl,:..ec:, a larger run of several thousand. V. OLD BUSINESS A. Wi l l isM TE72rti22 t"lgEi_rll.e~ya (Susan Theophanis) Tom said that what he is interested i.ns, financially, is simply recouping the production costs of an "Overture". The costs would be to publish the score of an orchestral arrangement. This cost would be $8,000-$10,0Q0. He asked whether the Art__ Lottery might assist here_.. Susan tither=ltle- Pager G T Steering Committee May 15, 1990 said that the entire: amount they hlav in the Arts Lottery is only $5,700 every six months and applying over a length of time to accumulates 8yt_00-$10,ti00 by 1994 would probably not be possible according to their policy. The Arts Lottery might, however, cover th7i:: cost of featured musir_i:y.risp such as YoYo Mar & atal<many who lives in Wlnchles:Ste;rd It is possible that individuals in the community might be willing to sponsor this event. There definitely is a high degree of interest in Reading in the Arts. Another possibility is the Mass. Council or a Federal Grant, assuming there is still money by that time. Susan Flannery pointed out that if we do ANY`!Th-ilt~G in 1994, this is the kind of project we should absolutely, positively do. Term also suggested that we might raffle off an original manuscript. Tom needs to sit down with Reading Symphony, before he composers, to be sure: they are capable of playing wheat he composes (this has been discussed with him previously) so the 3 Symphony is not left with the burden of hiring musicians they do not have to fall in parts he has written. To date he has not dome this. Susan T. will remind him. At this point in time, Tom feels we do have time. The financial climate on all fronts is in a state: of confusion. B.
