V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A; 2 tQ h n Iric_ Paul Sweeney:
Reading Community Carnival - July 11-14, 1990
We plan to borrow a gazebo from Reading Lumber from which we
will sell the remaining po tcard sets, postcards #11 and #12
and purple helium balloons with the 350th logo can them to
raise funds for the 350th, Inc. This is subject to the
approval of the Steering Committee. It was voted to allow
the 350th, Inc. to use the logo for this purpose.
A volunteer last was circulated for sign-up to work: in the
gazebo booth Wednesday-Friday E-10 and Saturday 10-10.
The Steering Committee felt that a limited run of tee shirts
to identify ourselves would be desirable. It was agreed that
thew." would be purple or purple/blue with white logo. Each
member of the Committee will buy their own shirt. As long as
the Friends of the Playground are selling tee shirts we do
not want to sell our tee shirts, to the public. Paul Sweeney
will talk: with Don Well ford or Phil Vaccaro at Reading Trophy
about this. Paul will call everyone for their sizes. We will
also have plasticene name tags with the logo and our names on
therm. Alan Foulds will look into straw skimmer-=style hats.
We will consider the purple/white color scheme to be a "test
run" rather than declare this the official 350th colors.

We should ask: Ray Couture about what is involved in
trademark:ing our logo.
D_ Ril.•i: (Susan Theophanis)
No one is heading this, up now. As time get? closer we might
get more active commitments from those who say they are
willing.

Bruce Morang would like to run a calendar of what we are
thinking about in 1994 to run in the Chronicle. Susan Horn
will, in Susan Flannery's absence, draw up that press release
and forward it to Susan F. for approval, editing and
submission, since Susan Flannery is the Publicity person.
We should grab the opportunity to get pictorial coverage of
the fact that the Business and Professional. Women's Club are
giving installment donations (we have received #2). Susan
Flannery should look into setting this up with Don Young.

Alan further included everyone's commentary and a list of
every event mentioned. (This list will be provided to Paul
Sweeney,. Susan Flannery, Ray Couture and Ken Latham and also
be held with the official copy of the Minutes. It is 14 pages
long.)
2. FORMAT
After some discussiony it was decided that there are some
events that will have to take place prior to the official
beginning of The Anniversary, such as release of the history.
It was agreed that the Anniversary should open with a big
event on New Year's Eve and end with a twig event on Charter
Day with other smaller events scattered between and even
.spilling over into July with the Reading Community Carnival
where we would 'sell all our leftovers.
r r 3„ FALL., 1993
Fund wiser the first or second week: in November: Readings of
the world merchandise as well as whatever we sell. A pre--
event to raise money and whatever is left over we would then
put in stores around town. A small auction could be attached
to this.
Release of the Town History, Reading Then and Now book, a
special Reading Calendar (with the Boy Scouts)
Concentration on Reading History in the schools.
4. NEW YEARS EVE: ANNIVERSARY BALL
Bob Bachelder was the former big band director at the old
Totem Pole at iti orumbega„ He has a group that still plays
together. He has approached us for consideration for the
Anniversary Ball. He lives in Reading.
The Lull could be run b some organization, even a reunion
class.
Camp Curtis Guild has been used in the pasty but is really
not big enough. The Field House is under the auspices of the
School Department and liquor cannot be served. Perhaps the
Radisson that was just opened in Woburn might be the answer.
But the location does not have to be decided at this •t:i.ripe.

. SCOUT JAMBOREE CHARTER DAY WEEKEND
Readings of the World (and maybe Wak:efields) could stage a
jamboree on Memorial Day weekend. Not only Boy Scouts (ice{imp
Curtis Guild) but Girl Scouts (.Camp Rice t"ti-ody) and Camp Fire
Boys and Girls, too or put them AL_L_. at Camp Curtis Guild.
They would came Saturday, stay overnight, fill the churches
Sunday morning and would then be available for a parade and
later participation in an afternoon event either Saturday or
Sunday. They would make a special patch f;_.r- the event.
6. FORMAL BEGINNING OF HOMECOMING: THURSDAY, MAY 2
Small opening ceremony, reception for visiting dignitaries,
opening of a tc:t(iporc-try/ artifact museum/visitors center.
7. UP-TOWN READING: FRIDAY, MAY 27
A First-Night type event using a button for admission to
a series of events in the 12 main public: buildings within
walking distance of one another in Reading center.
S. SATURDAY, MAY 28
Road Wally using historic clues and sites.
Block: Party Sock Hop (maybe run by the Class of 1954) in the
Municipal Parking Lot behind CVS. (Alan says L..ynnfield rented
portable bathrooms and no one wanted to be seen going in, so
they weren't used. There are public buildings that would be
able to be used.)
9. CHARTER DAY, SUNDAY, MAY 9
The Charter Tea at Parker Tavern (parking is a problem here).
Parade (with the Scoutss, if they are ,jamboreeing) to Memorial.
Park: followed by a Festival--mass eating event (bring your
own or have commercial feeders come in) and a band concert.
The birthday cake would be there. There could be a small.
ceremony or rededic<alti.+"n, and unveiling of whatever permanent
memorial we have decided on (shell, brand stand, etc.) before
the band concert.

P V. OLD BUSINESS
A. Reading Community Carnival- Julv 11-14, 1990
1. July 11-14, 1990
The Carnival-will be held Wednesday through Friday from 6-10
PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 10 PM culminating in fireworks
Saturday evening at 10:00. Rockwell Entertainment will be
there with their rides.
.2. Gazebo (Our Booth)
Paul passed around a photograph of the rectangular gazebo
that will be on loan from Reading Lumber (Bill Strout). They
will also supply shrubbery and/or flowers. We will have
electric power so we can string Christmas lights or whatever.
The gazebo will be situated next to several tents that the
National Guard have loaned for a community supper and
Strawberry Social. Bunting would be a good addition to the
gazebo if we can obtain it. We should have some sort of
banner, even a homemade one, possibly felt.
3. To Attract Attention
We are attempting to arrange for a barbershop group to
perform Wednesday or Thursday evening in conjunction with the
Strawberry Social planned by the Council on Aging (Lois
Bond). We have been in touch with Bob McCaffrey and George
Small and neither of their groups would be able to donate
services. We are now checking into Paul McCarthy (through
Don Dauphne of the Carnival Committee).to perform for us and
other organizations. Alan Foulds suggested an alternative
might be a Banjo Band.

4. Personnel
We will need Corporation and Steering Committee members to
man our gazebo. The Carnival Committee (Gene Richie) would
hope to see reciprocal volunteerism if there is an excess of
volunteers from one organization and shorthanded in other
areas. They will also need volunteers, for cleanup Sunday.
Paul will pass a sign-up sheet around at the Steering
committee meeting for our members to volunteer.
5. 350th Fund Raising
a. Postcard Packette #1 - We have 127 left to be sold
at.$:1.50/set '
b. Postcards #11 and #12 - To be sold at $.35 each.
Ed Palmer will run off historical information on
the back if he is able to do it before the
Carnival.
C. Helium Balloons - To be sold at $1.00 each.
Purple balloons with white 350th logo produced by
the Print Shack (Art Hayden). 1000 11" balloons
will be $171.60 which includes a $40.00 set up
charge for a print plate. Helium can be obtained
from Associated Gas Products in Everett. A
cylinder to fill 420 balloons would be $48.60 + $8
rental for the regulator. We will plan to use
only 420 balloons and save the rest for later. We
will still need string or ribbon for the balloons.
Paul will get the original logo from Judith Hunt
Gabriel for Print Shack to run through their laser
copier. We seem to be the only organization .
selling balloons at the Carnival to date. Paul
will ask Print Shack whether we can use this
$40.00 plate on other items at a later date (the
plate will be about 4" high).
It was voted to allocate funds not to exceed $300.00 for the
sole purpose of purchasing balloons complete with 350th logo
and rental of helium cylinder and regulator, and materials
for decoration of the 350th gazebo, for the purpose of
raising funds for Reading's 350th, Inc. at this year's
Reading Community Carnival, all subject to the approval of
the 350th Steering Committee.
It was voted that Ed Palmer pursue printing historical
information oft the back of postcards #11 and #12.

6. 5% Donation To Reading Community Carnival Committee
At meetings of the Carnival Committee it has been suggested
that organizations donate 5% of their profits to the Reading
Community Carnival Committee. The 350th, Inc. was formed
solely for the purpose of raising money'for the 350th
celebration so we cannot do this. Ed suggested that we
approcah the Carnival Committee and say that 5% of whatever
we take in we will accept as a donation from the Carnival
Committee to the 350th, Inc.
'7. Role.of the Reading Community Carnival in 19P4
Next Fall Paul would like Bill LaVoie, Chairman of the
Reading Community Carnival, to come in to go over the numbers
with us and we might then approach him about taking over this
aspect of the 1994 celebration.
8. Carnival Committee Fund Raiser
Paul has tickets for the June 23 fund raiser at the VFW
Post featuring a buffet dinner, broadway review show by
Colonial Chorus and dancing to a DJ. The tickets are $15
per person. Tickets will also be available at the door.
