Reading Town Hall
Committee Members Attending:
Alan Foulds, Chairman; Everett Blodgett; Shirley Buzderewicz;
Susan Horn; Ed Palmer; Paul Sweeney (Susan Flannery, Susan
Theophanis and Susan Wheltle were unable to attend.)
I. CALL TO ORDER
Alan Foulds called the meeting to order.
Meetings in November and December were not scheduled.
January 16, 1991 the meeting was postponed because of the
outbreak of war in the Middle East hours before the meeting.
January 29, 1991 the meeting had to be cancelled because of a
lack of quorum.
II. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING - October 16, 1990
VOTED: The Minutes of the October 16, 1991 meeting were
read and approved.
III. COMMUNICATIONS
A. Lester York (16 Lothrop Road)
He now has all the information he needs regarding
getting in touch with other Readings of The World Boy
Scout groups.
B. U.S. Postal Service
We requested information on selection criteria for stamps
and they sent a letter saying that no stamp may be issued
in honor of any cities, towns, municipalities, etc.
The original proposal we wanted to pursue was church
steeples Ed Palmer had talked with Nathalie Nordstrand
about this project. She says that quite often finished
photographic work might be accepted.
C. Invitation to Farewell Reception for Susan Flannery on
January 25, 1991.
D. Letter to Dave Bunton, Music Dept, High School
Don Stratton says he gave sheet music of his piece "RHS"
to the music department at the high school. We have
asked whether they do, indeed, have it.

IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. 350th, Inc. (Paul Sweeney, President)
"It Happened On Haven Street" Booklet
VOTED: The 350th, Inc. requested permission of the Steering
Committee to use the 350th logo on the back of the booklet.
It was so voted.
B. Writers' Committee (Ev Blodgett, liaison)
They held a meeting on February 13, 1991. They have made an
outline-style questionnaire that will be sent to clubs,
organizations and churches, hopefully, by March 1. They will
be asking for contact people. The big question now is how we
do a bulk mailing. Can we put it through Jonathan Edward's
department? Do we pay for the postage? It was the general
feeling that the funds should come from the 350th, Inc.
Paul will go to the post office to find out about a non-
profit bulk rate stamp, as well. Ev estimates he will be
1 sending out 100 questionnaires. The Steering Committee
feels the responses should come to P.O. Box 1994.
C. Parade Feasibility Committee (Ed Palmer, liaison)
Nothing to report. Bruce Morang is still researching the
Wakefield parade financial situation. Paul thought perhaps
we could incorporate the parade with a drum and bugle corps
competition.
D. Publicity
We have lost Susan Flannery who had done this in the past.
Cherrie DuBois may be interested in producing the newsletter
whether or not she becomes an actual member of the Steering
Committee.
E. Anniversary Ball (Susan Theophanis, liaison)
The Anniversary Bali Committee met in October and selected a
chairwomen, Mrs. Ferarra. Susan Theophanis will report
further on what went on at that meeting.
V. OLD BUSINESS
A. Letterhead Report
The Graphics Shop did letterhead, envelopes and business
cards for us gratis. They used purple ink on gray stock for
350th, Inc. purposes and on ivory stock for the Steering
Committee's use. Unfortunately, the zip codes on both are
wrong. The Steering Committee's zip should be 01867-2550

(NOT 01967-2550). The Corporation's zip should be 01867
(NOT 01867-2550).
B. Reading Symphony Orchestra Letter
In October Alan Foulds sent a letter to the Reading Symphony
Orchestra Board of Trustees regarding the on-going
discussions regarding a possible composition by William
Thomas McKinley. The letter asked for input and guidance
from the orchestra in reviewing his suggestion and deciding
whether this musical composition would be an appropriate way
in which to celebrate our town's anniversary. According to
Ed Palmer, McKinley is supposed to meet with the director of
the symphony and, to date, this has not happened.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. Susan F_lann!ft Resignation
The Selectmen will have to appoint her successor. We should
check the Town Clerk's office to see whether she submitted
her resignation letter. There is also concern that we elect
a new Vice Chairperson to replace Susan Flannery.
B. Annual Report, 1990
Alan presented the report he was required to file with the
Town, summarizing our activities in 1990. [Report attached)
C. Charter Day
Alan has been doing some original research regarding
Reading's beginnings. it has always been assumed that May
29,•1644 we separated from Lynn, changed the name from Lynn
Village to Reading and then incorporated as a town. It turns
out that probably none of these took place on that day. We
were probably never a part of Lynn. The name change actually
took place June 10, 1644 and we have not yet discovered when
the town was incorporated. As far as our celebration is
concerned Alan feels we should still go with 1644, but should
push the thrust of the celebration back from May 29 to June
10. Alan would also like to use the name "Reading Day"
rather than Corporation Day or Charter Day. Alan has spoken
with the Historical Commission and they would like Alan to go
to the Selectmen to get a proclamation regarding this new
date. Copies of Alan's research and documentation have been
distributed to all members of the 350th Anniversary Steering
Committee in attendance and additional copies may be obtained
directly from Alan Foulds.

LEADING MASSACI~US~ i S
,350th ANNIVERSA PY
During 1990, Reading's 350th Anniversarv Steering committee moved
forward in its planning for a celebration in 1994. The r.1.lans have
evolved somewhat from the first proposal as the Committee has received
ideas from townspeople and data from celebrations in other communities.
This trend will likely--c-ontinue-thr-oughout the coming months and years.
The following schedule comprises the current olan:
November, 1993: Reading's Fair. A pre-celebration event with an
exhibit of other "Readings" of the world, a preview of the
celebration, and the release of a new historv book.
January-April, 1994: A series of individual events of undetermined
nature to be sponsored by town organizations. This will possibly
include concerts, dances, field days and exhibits.
May, 1994: Grand Finale Weekend, or Week, to include a ball, an
outdoor block party, a "first night" type of event called "Uptown
Reading", historical tours, a parade, a concert and picnic, a
Party In The Park", and-special church services.
In conjunction with these plans, several sub-committees have been
established to investigate the feasibility and organization of a
parade;. to formulate plans for the publishing of a history.book; and
to plan an anniversary ball.
To-facilitate fund raising activities the Committee authorized
"Reading's 350th, Inc", a non-profit corporation, to use the
anniversary logo, designed by Judith Hunt Gabriel, on the front of tee
shirts that went on sale during this past holiday season. The tee
shirt sales are in addition to the postcard project already undertaken
by that organization.
The committee also authorized the corporation to use the logo
during the "Reading Community Carnival" in July. Using a gazebo
borrowed from a local lumber companv as a display booth, the
Corporation distributed Reading's 350th balloons, postcards and
baseball caps, and sponsored a barbershop quartet concert.
As the Committee moves into its second full year, it has adopted a
long-range plan, which maps out its activities on a high level through
to 1994. The Committee plans to use this document to guide its
planning and execution during its tenure.

New tee shirts were put on sale at Reading Trophy and
Eugene's. We should look into selling them in the Atlantic
from a table some weekend toward Spring. Shirley will look
into this. '

B. 350th Display
Ed Palmer went to see Dick Forrest of MassBank for Savings
inquiring about the building that they own on Haven Street
and use simply for storage. Ed inquired about making a 350th
display for the empty windows.
C. 1994 Memorabilia Sale
We should keep in mind that we will want to have a store
front for memorabilia, or, perhaps, a push cart like they use
in Quincy Market hat we could wheel out on weekends.
D. Sidewalk Sale
We should also consider a table at the annual sidewalk sales.
E. Post Cards - Post Office
Ed Palmer went to see the Reading Post Master, Ed Driscoll,
to ask whether they could sell our post cards. Driscoll will
have to,put thru a voucher to buy some cards and sell them.
He is currently trying to get his voucher approved. Ed told
him that, if it would help get the voucher approved that we
would give them to the post office for $3.00 a package and
they could earn $.50 on each one. This offer is not in
keeping with the By-Laws of the 350th, Inc. and Ed will have
to go back and explain that to Driscoll. Driscoll also
offered Ed a display case right beside the windows. The
display is now up and has drawn great interest. In addition
Ed added 'a little suggestion "Send a Reading greeting to the
troops."
F. Address Labels for the Troops
Ed suggested giving a free sheet of labels with every package
of postcards sold. He feels he could get some business in
town to print these for us.
G. Historical Commission Topical Go'Round
On February 28, 1991 the Reading Historical Commission has
invited six or seven other Historical Commissions to meet for
a topical go-round. A set of our postcards will be given to
each of the people coming.
H. Enamel Lapel Pins
Wouldn't it be nice to have our logo on a lapel pin.
1. Newsletter
Is this project under the jurisdiction of the corporation or
the steering committee? It was agreed that it will come in
under the steering committee. Survey
J. Bulk Mailing Stamp
We also need Non Profit Bulk mailing stamp.
