READING'S 350th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION STEERING COMMITTEE TOWN HALL 4 16 LOWELL STREET d READING MA 01967-2550 Page 2 May 28, 1991 Steering Committee E. William Thomas McKinley talked with Susan Theophanis. Susan explained that the proposed cello concerto he had been willing to write was simply too much money to produce. Tom then suggested he might do a jazz composition which would cost us a total of about $5,000 to produce. He would need $1,500 up front and could probably convince a friend (Stolzman??) to perform. Ed Palmer felt that something like this would be of interest to the Reading Symphony and they might be willing to help subsidize the event. Arts Lottery backup might also be possible. A jazz concert held at the High School (the auditorium will seat about 1150) would be a possibility. IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS A. 350th Inc. (Paul Sweeney, President) 1. Summerfest, 1991 (July 10-13, 1991) There will be a meeting at the YMCA on June 2, Sunday from 7:30 until 8:15. Someone should represent our Committee. We will plan to use Susan Theophanis' canopy and sell our tee shirts, postcards, Haven Street book, and balloons. We will also suggest to the planning committee than we offer face painting for free. 2. Sidewalk Sale (May 30-June 1, 1991) We will have a table outside the BayBank to sell our wares. Paul will try to get a few balloons helium-filled as a display. We will not get a tank until the Summerfest. B. Writers' Committee (Ev Blodgett, liaison) Responses to the mailing have been coming in and some writing has been done. If enough organizations do not submit written histories we may have to look at a more pictorial volume. The meeting of the Committee was postponed (May 22nd). C. Parade Feasibility Committee (Ed Palmer, liaison) Ed feels there will be nothing further to report until the Fall. In the meantime he keep abreast of other celebration towns and how their parades come off. D. Wakefield Fourth of July Parade The Steering Committee had been invited to participate in this year's Wakefield Fourth of July Parade. We decided not to, but will be interested to see how successful it is. We may want to be involved in the future. i r Page 3 May 28, 1991 Steering Committee E. Publicity (Alan Foulds, temporary) 1.
