Writers' Committee A great deal of progress has been made by deciding to create a pictorial history publication. There is a meeting of this committee tomorrow, March 19, 1992. C. Anniversary Ball - No report D. McKinley Concert There is a meeting at Jack Turner's house on March 23rd to discuss just what the Reading Symphony Orchestra's role in this event will be. As you recall, we are now talking about a jazz composition by William Thomas McKinley to be performed using the RSO as background. It will cost about $5,000. E. Publicity Don Young took pictures of the Committee showing the group at work, the new memorabilia available and the Horvath's presenting gifts from Reading, England to the Stee±ing Committee. F. Parade John Shaw (Lions Club), Dr. Roland Blanchard (Bag Pipe Band), and Charlie Peacock (Reading Militia) came to the meeting. Ed Palmer and Cathy Quimby sent letters regarding the parade Page 3 Steering Committee March 18, 1992 Ed Palmer says: "Bands:- I would certainly recommend that you accept the Shriners offer of the June dates of 4th or 5th of June, 1994...Their 21 units for $3,000, plus feeding costs, would be a real bargain. In previous discussion of school bands costing $1,000 or more, is too much. Also you might have a problem with school bands in June because many may have lost their seniors by that time. Also, don't overlook the Air Force band that was formerly in the Pease Air Force Base but is now located at Hanscom Field in nearby Bedford. Of course, if we could get the Ancient and Honorable group from Boston to lead the parade, it would be great. Marching groups:- I don't believe that a 350th anniversary Parade would be complete without a colonial marching group. Again, I believe theses groups would come for the cost of feeding. We had a great showing of these groups in 1976 and believe we could get some of these again. Other Readings:- As for inviting some of the other Readings to be represented in the parade would add a lot of "color" to this parade. -Maybe'just one small section in the parade with representatives, or a scout troop would be a fine addition." Ed also stressed the need to appoint a chairperson. Cathy Quimby says she spoke in length with Dave Bunton, Director of the Reading Memorial High School Band and he would like to be on this Parade Sub Committee. Dave says that high school bands generally get $1,000 plus transportation (usually 2-3 buses). Alan Foulds also presented some information gleaned from the March 8th parade held in Stoneham in honor of Nancy Kerrigan. These notes are attached. Jessie Morash of the YMCA says the children who participate there would like to become involved in the parade. Discussion was of dates, routes and funds. decided by vote of the Steering Committee will be staged on Saturday afternoon, June Shaw, Roland Blanchard and Charlie Peacock meeting in the near future to begin plans. be liaison to the Parade committee. It was finally that the parade 4, 1994. John will call a Cathy Quimby will Page 4 Steering Committee March 18, 1992 G. Wakefield's 350th - No report H. North Reading A Fourth of July Committee has organized and will serve as the defacto 350th Committee. There will be a big celebration on July 4, 1992 and we will look into the possibility of setting up a booth to preview our celebration and sell memorabilia if possible. North Reading has indicated that they want to be in our parade with a float and involved with Jubileve. Colonial Chorus has some ties to the North Reading Theater.Workshop, which might be a possibility for Jubileve Involvement. They will also be involved in the Flag Run on January 1, 1994. I. Other Readings: Reading, England Allen and Margo Horvath won a trip to England and visited Reading, England in March. They had occasion to meet with the Mayor or Reading, Robert Dimmick, to present him with T- Shirts with our logo on them. They, in turn received gifts of a plate showing the Abbey Gateway, reading, England and two books: "The Story of Reading" by Daphne Phillips and a guide book to the Reading Abbey (which is a museum). They reported that Reading is a city of over 100,000. The current mayor will not be in office in 1994 and his successor will most likely be John Wright who is currently their promotional manager of leisure. activities. They also took a tape of Alan Foulds' voice inviting them to participate in our celebration and the Mayor felt it might be played on their local radio station. V. ON-GOING REVIEWS A. GANTT Chart review we seem to be pretty much on target. Alan will prepare a new GANTT Chart updating our planning. B. Celebration Period review The current plan we have adopted and are going by at this moment is attached to these minutes. Page 5 Steering Committee March 18, 1992 C. Budget The budget sub-committee made up of Alan Foulds, Paul Sweeney and Shirley Buzderewicz met and prepared the following rough outline of projected expenses. The total for our celebration will be about $40,000. This is broken down as follows: $20,000 pictorial history book $10,000 rarade $ 5,000 fireworks $ 4,000 Jubileve $200-300 Reading Quest $ 500 Old Fashioned Field Day $ 300 Committee's Portable Gazebo Booth VI. OLD BUSINESS A. Clubs and Organizations Alan made a presentation to the League of Women Voters who want to participate in Jubileve and have a float in the parade. When Alan talked to the Militia two weeks ago he asked if we could use their 'canon in the opening ceremonies. B. Summerfest, 1992 We still hope to have built a portable gazebo booth that we can use for our headquarters. The movies available in the library are "Building Memorial Park" and "The Movie Queen". There is also a two-rack carousel slide tour of Reading. We talked about using an army tent from Camp Curtis Guild as our "Little Theatre". We might also think about other memorabilia possibilities: License Plate Frames, Front License Plates, Tote Bags, and Bumper Stickers. The next meeting is April 5, 1992, at 7:30 PM at the YMCA. VII. NEW BUSINESS - none Page 6 Steering Committee March 18, 1992 VIII. NEXT MEETING: April 28, 1992, Berger Room, Reading Town Ham 8:00 PM IX. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 PM.
