Also Attending: Anna Carroll and Ken Latham, both directors of the 350th, Inc.; Dick Curtis. I. CALL TO ORDER Alan Foulds called the meeting to order at 8:10 PM. II. STEERING COMMITTEE ORGANIZATION Reading Public School Committee has appointed Mary E. Williams of 82 Mineral Street, to replace Susan Wheltle on the SteeringCommittee. Mary is a recent member of the School Committee and will keep both the School Committee and the School Administration informed about plans for the 350th. The 9-member Steering Committee is now complete. We need new Steering Committee letterhead business size envelopes. Shirley will look into this. From now on all correspondence to the Steering Committee will go out in plain white envelopes. III. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING The minutes of the March 18, 1992 meeting were approved. IV. COMMUNICATIONS A. Reading Public School Committee Barbara Philbrick informed us that Mary E. Williams will be the School representative on the Steering Committee B. Reading Symphony Orchestra To be discussed later in the meeting. Mayor of Reading, England, Robert Dimmick We received a letter from Councillor Dimmick acknowledging his visit with the Horvath's and asking us to send a reminder invitation to the mayor that be at the end of 1993. Jay Griffin, Medford Centennial Parade Committee The parade celebrating the 100 year birthday of Medford will be held May 3, 1992, Sunday. Paul Sweeney has requested feed back from the event. Jay Griffin, Historical Chairman c/o 15 George Street Medford, MA 02155 F. Merrimack Valley Sweet Adelines We responded to the Sweet Adelines offer of their entertainment services. We will keep them informed as we continue our planning. Barbara Casparius 77 Chandler Street Tewksbury, MA 01876 V. COMMITTEE AND LIAISON REPORTS A. 350th, Inc. (Paul Sweeney, President) We took in a total of $1,017.10 on the two Saturdays we sold Easter coffee mugs and other memorabilia in the Atlantic .foyer. There was discussion and a vote regarding the Reading Symphony Orchestra concert. This was discussed later in the meeting. Summerfest: July 8-11, 1992: We hope to have our portable gazebo available by then. We have planned to show slides or movies of old Reading. We will be selling our merchandise. Next meeting will be May 3 at the YMCA. 350th Mascot: It was suggested we consider a skunk to be our official mascot. There is a story about a man who went walking in the Reading woods and came upon a skunk. This is from a journal that could be worked into a children's story. Sidewalk Sale: We will call the Chamber of Commerce to find when the next one is. Paul Sweeney will draft a letter to the businesses in Reading for fund raising. B. Book Committee (Everett Blodgett, liaison) The next meeting will be April 29, 1992 (Wed.) TOMORROW! The goal of the meeting is to get a chairperson!! The book will be a pictorial book of about 350 pages, all black an white (maybe some sepia). The Committee intends to s the book out strictly for printing having done l ed' ing themselves. It must be to the printer in A ri 1993 to be out by November, 1993. Prints are being a uated for content, quality and reproducibility. It was voted that $250 be allocated for petty cash for the Book Committee for material and supplies under the direction of the liaison. All communication must come through the liaison. Page 4 Steering Committee April 28, 1992 C. Parade Committee (Cathy Quimby, liaison) The kick-off meeting will be May 11, 1992 at 8:00. John Shaw is the chairman. The 1994 date of the parade will be June 4 at 2:00 PM. D. Anniversary Ball (Susan Theophanis, liaison) The Grand Ball will be held at the Radisson in Woburn on June 3, 1994. The Halloween Ball will be held October 31, 1992 at the Hillview Country Club in North Reading. It will be a costume ball (optional) and period costuming will be encouraged. There will be a cash bar and cider, coffee and donuts will be served. The Hillview will accommodate 350 people. The Committee hopes to get Bob Bacheldor's band. The next meeting of the Halloween Ball Sub-Committee will be May 12, 1992 at Grace Fitzpatrick's home - 162 Walnut Street at 7:30. E. Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO) (Susan Theophanis, liaison) The total cost of producing and performing William Thomas McKinley's jazz composition will be $5,000. The performance will take place in May, 1994 at the Reading Memorial High School. The 350th Committee will pick up half the cost of the production with the RSO picking up the other half. We need to give McKinley half of the final cost now (the 350th's share being $1,250). There was discussion about the date of the performance (probably May 7 or 14, 1994) and about who will actually receive the profits from the performance (OR cover a loss). It was voted to approve the financial aspects of participation in the Reading Symphony Orchestra performance of the William Thomas McKinley jazz composition up to a maximum of $3,000. A letter to the RSO should suggest a May 14th date. The vote was unanimous with one abstention. F. Final Day Picnic Entertainment could be Sweet Adelines, Spice of Life or Down East Revival. G. Publicity (Cathy Quimby/Nancy Smethurst) We should thank Fabric Town and Atlantic for their help in our recent Easter coffee mug sales. H. Wakefield's 350th (Nancy Bertrand,., contact): no report 1. North Reading's 350th'(Penny_Richards, contact):. no report J. Antiquarian Society May 13, 1992, Thurs., 8:00 "Digging Up The Devil" by Richard Trask at the Parker Tavern. The 350th will have a display on Charter Tea Day, June 14, 1992 Page 5 Steering Committee April 28, 1992 K. Historical Commission May 11, 1992, Monday, 7:30 "Restoration of Faneuil Hall" by John McCauley at the Reading Public Library. VI. ON-GOING REVIEWS A. GANTT Chart review Alan will draft an updated GANTT chart. We will add: Halloween Ball - October, 1992 Reserve Radisson - Dec.3, 1992 Invite Reading, England - late, 1993 Book to Printer - Aug, 1993 Book Out - November, 1993 Contact Boy Scouts re:Pancake Breakfast - Oct. 92 B. Celebration Period review C. Budget review We must add $2500 for the McKinley concert. The Budget Sub- Committee will meet in June. VII OLD BUSINESS: Presentation to Clubs and Organizations A. Business and Professional Women's Club They would rather fund something than run something. B. League of Women Voters Float for parade, something at Jubileve, picnic, maybe a bake contest. C. Boy Scouts - pancake breakfast (contact them in Oct. 92) VIII. NEW BUSINESS - None IX.
