Paul Sweeney reported that he had talked with Len Rucker, General Manager of the Reading Municipal Light Department about keeping the 350th booth on Haven Street for fund-raising use by other Town organizations. Mr. Rucker's response was that the decision should be referred to the Town Manager. Paul also reported a call from Ray Couture about a telephone solicitation for the souvenir program. IV. A speaker is needed for the Rotary meeting next Monday noontime. Shirley and Cathy will attend. Mary asked that sponsorship for the program be mentioned at the Rotary meeting. Special candy and a cake were discussed. The budget of $500 will stand for now. Ed also reported on the list of attendees from other Readings who have accepted our invitation to the opening ceremonies. Alan presented the current budget figures. Shirley reported $31,789.14 was available. Susan reported that Tom Goddard of Eric's Greenhouse will loan all the plants and flowers for ball decorations and will contribute a plant for each table. Suggestions for any group who might wish to make a donation were: trolley tours, historic tour program guide, or the souvenir program. New Business Mary reported that Coolidge will base their annual play on a progression of U.S. history and it will feature period slides from Reading (history through music). Arnold Berger is sponsoring a student mural for the front of the school. Alan reported that Woburn City Band charges `$750 for a one-hour appearance, and their appearance has not been arranged and budgeted to date. Marlene Wolfe reported that Art Hayden will need 2-1/2 or 3 weeks for printing the program, which means a deadline of April 11 for delivery on April 29. Committee writeups will be completed by the weekend so that they can be typed. "How Reading Grew Up" would cost about $1.10 per book to reprint and perhaps could be funded by a willing donor for sale or for school use. On motion of Cathy Quimby it was voted that books be reprinted for an expenditure of not over $1600 and that the books be sold for $3.50 each. The Chamber of Commerce plans to decorate with red', white and blue bunting, but the 350th Committee plans to decorate the Town buildings in purple and white. Finding purple and white has been difficult, but a North Attleboro company will be contacted for prices and ideas. Ellen had priced purple ribbon from Fabric Town. Discussion took place as to protocol for inviting State officials to the parade and whether they should be invited to be on the reviewing stand or to march. The Governor, the two Senators, the two Congressmen, two State Senators and State Representative and the Selectmen will be invited to both march in the parade and view the parade from the reviewing stand. Anna will pursue the door decoration project with the Business and Professional Women's Club. Page 3 Reading's 350th Steering Committee March 23, 1994 The Book Committee has sold 1382 books and is obtaining a Library of Congress number. The book will be a valuable resource tool because it will have a complete index thanks to Everett and Ginny Blodgett. On motion of Paul Sweeney, it was voted to instruct Reading's 350th Inc. to enter into a contract with the Wakefield Item Press to produce 2500 copies of At Wood End. Jubileve has lined up 18 acts and 10 sites to date. 500 buttons have been made and will be for sale on May 1. The food court will be held in the Light Department parking lot. Ball Tickets are now available and are numbered. Publicity about the fact that tickets are still available is important, and also that formal or period dress is not required. Mary Williams suggested that "Reading Notes" for May should be a special 350th edition because it will be published just a few days before the celebration period. Cathy Quimby reported that the Town Meeting Warrant will have a purple cover and will feature a schedule of 350th events. The Symphony Pops Concert will be May 7 at 8 p.m. V.
