Minutes of the 50th Meeting of
Reading's 350th Anniversary Celebration Steering Committee
April 5, 1994
7:30 P.M.
Berger Room, Reading Town Hall
Committee Members in Attendance:
Shirley Buzderewicz, Alan Foulds, Everett Blodgett, Mary
Williams, Ellen Stanton, Paul Sweeney, Cathy Quimby, Susan
Theophanis and Nancy Smethurst
Also Attending:

I. CALL TO ORDER
Alan Foulds called the meeting to order at 7:43 p.m.
II. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The minutes of February 17, March 9 and March 23 were read and
approved as amended.
III. COMMUNICATIONS
Correspondence received was read and discussed; including a
newspaper article from Connecticut about the celebration. Susan
reported that Meadowbrook Golf Club will open their facilities to
the public on June 6 and contribute the proceeds to the 350th.
IV. OTHER BUSINESS
Budget Review
Shirley reported that $47,013.05 is in the checking account plus
an additional $2,172 and $2900 just received as of this date.
Souvenir Program
Ellen reported that over 116 sponsorships had been received to
date and a few more were expected. The tight deadline for
printing was discussed.
Book
Alan asked if a reception at the Library was still planned for
the initial distribution of the book. Everett felt it was too
early to commit definitely, but that it was probable. Alan asked
that he be informed of the status of the book so that he can
report to Town Meeting next Monday. 1540 have been sold to date,
and it has been accepted by the Library of Congress.

Parade
Cathy reported that Ted Cohen found no problem with State
dignitaries marching in the parade because they are not there as
candidates. Cathy encountered a great deal of negativity
concerning "over-solicitation" when she made some telephone
calls. There will be no Grand Marshal, but 90+ year Readingites
will be honored. Bunting and decoration will be discussed when
Cathy has more details. Selectmen-approval is needed for a
banner and we will request an agenda time to discuss this with
the Board of Selectmen.
"How Reading Grew Up"
Mary has had the book re-printed but could not find a sponsor.
Schools
Birch Meadow is having a 350th Festival on April 13 with
interactive workshops. Mary will attend the School Committee
meeting Thursday to update them on the celebrations planned by
the various schools. On motion of Mary Williams it was voted to
accept the Coolidge Middle School production of history through
music as an official 350th event.

A Committee has been formed and the Quest will begin at 10 AM and
end at Noon on June 4. It is all within walking distance but

Reading Day
Paul had a walk-through with the pyrotechnician at Birch Meadow
field.
New Business
Janice Landry of Le Metro Cafe has been working to provide an old
steam engine train at the depot for the entire day on June 4.
Perhaps the Governor could even arrive on the train if he is
planning to attend the parade.

May Day
Mary needs people available to sell their tickets, buttons, etc.
on May 1 at the Senior Center in the afternoon. Mary would like
to have an informational video tape running during the May Day
event.
Other
Town Meeting will feature a special salute to the 350th.
V. NEXT MEETING(S) - 7:30 p.m., April 19, 1994 and weekly in
May. Every night of the 350th celebration will be posted as a
meeting in case we need to meet.
VI. ADJOURNMENT - Alan Foulds adjourned meeting at 10:25 p.m.

Paul Sweeney called the meeting to order at 10:56 p.m.
The Treasurer read the financial statement and reported a cash
balance of $43,889.14 on 3/22/94. On motion of Alan Foulds, the
Treasurer's report was accepted as presented.
II. OTHER BUSINESS
III. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 11:05 p.m.
