Selectmen's Meeting Room, Reading Town Hall Committee Members in Attendance: Alan Foulds, Everett Blodgett, Mary Williams, Ellen Stanton, Shirley Buzderewicz, Catherine Quimby, Paul Sweeney, Susan Theophanis and Nancy Smethurst. Also Attending: Anna Carroll (350th Inc.) I. CALL TO ORDER Alan Foulds called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m. II. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS The minutes of the April 19th and April 26th meetings were approved as read. III. COMMUNICATIONS Mary Williams checked regarding the lighting on tennis courts for Reading Day and the tournament has requested lights until 8:30. Cathy will check with the Town Manager as to whether or not the entire area will be closed at 6 p.m. On motion of Nancy Smethurst, seconded by Cathy Quimby, it was voted to include Henry Murphy's Memorabilia/Postcard Event at the Library on June 2 (or June 1) as an official part of the 350th celebration. The Committee accepted a small 350th needlepoint decoration made by Effie Conary, and will display this item as much as possible. IV. OTHER BUSINESS Budget Review The May Day sales event was very successful, and more donations are being received. Souvenir Sales The sale of buttons and programs was discussed. Everett has tentative dates during the week of May 23 for book distribution .4 at the Library. On motion of Everett Blodgett, seconded by Cathy Quimby it was voted to re-order the merchandise in the quantities as recorded by Paul. The souvenir program will be sold at the Symphony Concert on Saturday night. The shack will be staffed as much as possible including evenings in the week before the celebration starts. A number of local merchants will be approached to sell programs and buttons at their business locations. The participating businesses will be listed on cable-tv. Trolley Tours Some members of the Historical Commission made a brief appearance and asked whether or not one additional trolley trip at 4:30 would be possible. $1500 has been raised to date, but the cost of a brochure for trolley participants or markers for the sites mentioned on the tour has not been figured. On motion of Cathy Quimby, it was voted to extend the hours of the trolley tour by adding one run at 4:30. On motion of Everett Blodgett, it was voted that money raised by sale of trolley tours may be used by the Historical Commission to cover their expenses in conjunction with the trolley tour. Video Coverage Alan reported on his conversation with Continental Cablevision regarding their coverage of the events. Opening Ceremonies Invitations to attend the opening ceremonies have been sent to all previous 350th Committee members. Committee members and their guest will be invited to attend the reception the night before (May 28). The Ball Susan mentioned that some people were under the impression that tickets were for a dinner and others without a ticket could join the dance after the meal. The police will have two officers on duty from 7 until midnight and the Chief will be on duty inside as a volunteer. Schools The Joshua Eaton celebration will begin at 10 a.m. instead of 9. Barrows is planning an event for this Friday, May 6. Music Concert Mary requested permission to have a program printed. On motion of Shirley Buzderewicz, seconded by Paul Sweeney, it was voted to authorize Mary to spend $200 on printing this program. Reading Quest The Chronicle needs to change the time to 9 a.m. for this event on its schedule. Page 3 Reading's 350th Steering Committee May 3, 1994 Parade The reviewing stand will be supplied by the State. The Parade Committee will discuss opening a stand to sell soda at the starting point of the parade because of the large number of marchers who will be present. There are 99 units in the parade. Jubileve Over 400 buttons were sold on May Day. All vendors at Food Court will need temporary licenses from Health Department. The Board of Health will be meeting on May 12 and would entertain discussion about waiving the $15 fee. Moynihan Lumber's band will appear in the parade and also in Jubileve, but they might need electricity to appear on the Common. Lecture Series This is not being sponsored by Elder Services. Reading Day Paul needs an additional $400 beyond the original sum appropriated. Paul will meet with the RMLD regarding electrical power for the sound systems. On motion of Everett Blodgett, seconded by Ellen Stanton, it was voted to authorize Paul to spend an additional $400 above his previously-budgeted amount. Other Cathy reported the cost of a Town flag for the State House Hall of Flags would be $439, and could be considered if we have money left. Shirley requested permission for BayBank to use the 350th logo. On motion of Mary Williams, it was voted to authorize use of the logo in celebration materials such as best wishes for the celebration, etc. V. NEXT MEETING(S) - 7:30 p.m., May 10, 1994 VI.
