Minutes of the 59th meeting of
Readings 350th Anniversary Celebration Steering Committee
June 7, 1994
7:30 P.M.
Employees Lounge, Reading Town Hall
Committee Members in Attendance:
Alan Foulds, Everett Blodgett, Ellen Stanton, Paul Sweeney, Mary
Williams, Nancy Smethurst, Cathy Quimby, and Susan Theophanis
Also Attending:
Anna Carroll (350th Inc.). Jack Cairl and Virginia Adams arrived
about 8:45 p.m.
I. CALL TO ORDER
Alan Foulds called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.
II. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS
No minutes were available.
III. COMMUNICATIONS
Alan received four letters of thanks and congratulations for the
350th events, and Susan and Everett each received one.
Ellen reported that a postal station will be set up at Birch
Meadow for Reading Day and she suggested we sell the souvenir
program with postage affixed so that it can be canceled on
Reading Day.
Everett reported that 2400 books have been sold and that he is
selling them from his house today and tomorrow.
Susan reported that the bar at the ball made approximately $3000,
making the total profit about $6000 (estimated).
Reading Quest cost $200 and was extremely popular.
Field Day went well, but was short of workers.
Anna reported that many people had asked for T-shirts, and Ellen
was keeping a list of names.
IV. OTHER BUSINESS
Reading Day
On motion of Alan Foulds, seconded by Everett Blodgett, it was
voted to increase this budget by $1000 to pay for additional
fireworks, a rental van, radios, etc.
Dr. Sellers asked and received the Committee's permission to
distribute free balloons at Reading Day.
The Antiquarian Society asked and received the Committee's
permission to display their giant puppets on Reading Day.

There will be eight portable toilets. Some food vendors will be
set up at Imagination Station, and some volunteers are needed to
admit the four militia groups to the designated area about 7 p.m.
Birch Meadow Drive may be closed by the Police Department when it
becomes necessary. Strolling performers such as clowns will be
contacted and asked to perform.
Reports
A comprehensive packet detailing the celebration will be prepared
by the Committee for a permanent file, and work on this will
start at the next meeting.
Other
Virginia Adams complimented the Committee, and reported that
because of numerous requests, the Historical Commission will
produce a printed copy of the trolley tour narrative.
V. NEXT MEETING(S) - 7:30 p.m., June 14, 1994.
VI. ADJOURNMENT - Alan Foulds adjourned meeting at 8:50 p.m.
