The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M. by W. Hughes.

Minutes
A motion was made to accept the minutes of November 18, 1987
by Mr. J. Fallon, seconded by Mr. P. Hichborn. The vote was
unanimous.
Correspondence
Correspondence was postponed
Mrs and Mrs, Karlmer - Washington} Park
Mr, and Mrs. R. Kaminer came before the Recreation Committee
to register complaints concerning the safety and damage of
baseballs flying into adjoining yards at Washington Park.
Mr. and Mrs. Kaminer sent a letter t-o the Recreation Dept.
back in May, 1987, concerning this problem. At that time
they met with Ted McIntire, Bill Hughes, and Chris Copeland.
At this point nothing has been done. The committee
sympathized with the Kaminers, and assured them they would

Mr, Paul Langone - Little League Park sprinkler systeM
Mr. Paul Langone, Commissioner of Little League Baseball,
submitted a proposal to the committee, whereby, Mr.
Moynihan, of Moynihans Lumber, North Reading, would
underwrite the financial cost of an extension of the
sprinkler system at Little League Park. Further, Mr.
Langone has requested permission that members of the Little
League Association be allowed to remodel an existing small
building by putting in water and a sink, and also make other
general improvements at the Field.
The Committee informed Mr. Langone -they do not have
.jurisdiction at the park, as it falls under the Department
of Public Works responsibility, However, they did indicate
they support the proposal and will communicate their support
to the D.P.W. by letter.
A motion was made by Mr. J. Fallon to endorse the Proposal
for an extension to the sprinkler system at Little League
Park. Seconded by Mr. R.Fotino. The vote was unanimous.
Mr. Kevin Flatlet' - Swimming Pool
Mr. Flatley, along with a number of other concerned citizens
sought the support of the Recreation Committee towards
securing $25,000.00 for a Feasibility Study to determine if
enclosing and/or rebuilding the existing town pool is
possible. The Committee members discussed the methods that
could be utilized to secure the necessary funds.
Mr. J. Connelly moved that the Recreation Committee support,
in principal, the direction of the Pool Expansion
Feasibility Committee's request, that a figure not to exceed
$25,000.00 be appropriated by the town or that the support
of the Town Engineer be received so that a feasibility of
enclosing and/or rebuilding the existing town pool be
completed by March 1,1988. The motion was seconded by
Mr.R. Fotino and the vote was unanimous.
It was further noted that a public opinion poll of town
citizens should be conducted concerning this project.

Rolicv Manual Revision
A letter was sent to the Town Manager regarding the revision
of the Policy Manual and its validity. C. Copeland, B.
Hughes and Town Manager, Peter I Hechenbleikner will be
meeting to discuss this.
Correspondence
A letter from Mr. Drew Bililies, Spinning Wheel Programs,
has been received. Mr. Bililies is asking the Reading
Recreation Committee to endorse his letter to Superintendent
Robert J. Munnelly regarding a request that fees for the use
of Birch Meadow Gym be waived. After discussion, the
committee agreed they would endorse Mr. Bililles letter.
A letter was received from "Camp Hope" describing their
summer program and was accepted as a point of information.
A motion was made by Mr. J. Fallon and seconded by Mr. P.
Hichborn to accept the Revised Budget Approval. The vote
was unanimous.
Old Business
C. Copeland informed the committee that in the future any
discipline concerning the Recreation Department would be
handled directly by her, and the committee would not be
involved.
C. Copeland informed the committee that Ruth Cogan, director
of the Human Services Division would be attending a
Recreation Committee in the near future.
A discussion concerning the Master Plan - Agenda Item, at
Town Meeting brought the following recommendations:
1. Developeing Batchelder Field
a. Tot/lot equipment
b. Parking lot
c. Utility Soccer Field
2. Play Structure - Memorial Park
Pool - $25,000.00 Feasibility Study
4. Additional Bleachers - Barrows, Coolidge
5. Additional lighting - Birch Meadow

New Business
Recommendation has been given to the Supervisor in regard to
summer employees - (a) send letters to past employees -
Inviting them to apply for up-coming summer positions <b>
advertise In local papers, Chronicle and Suburban News,
during the month of January, while students are home from
school.
The Town Pool is being worked on at present. The penalty
date is May 14, 1988.
Chris has requested that any telephone calls to her be
placed in the afternoon at the Town Hall, not Reading High
School.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at
10:20.
