The meeting was called to order at 7:40 P.M. by W. Hughes.
Members Present: W. Hughes, J. Donovan, J. Fallon,
P. Hichborn L. Warnock J. Connelly
Members Not Present: R. Coco, K. Rybicki, R. Fotino
Associate Members - K. Kaminar
and Mr. Catalfamo, Fincom Rep.

Ms. Ann Gentile, Ms. Vicky Schelling, and
Mr. John O'Brien - re- Hunt Memorial Park
MINUTES
A Motion was made by Mr. John Fallon to accept the minutes
of February 10. The motion was seconded by Mr. Peter
Hichborn. The vote was unanimous.
CITIZENS - HUNT MEMORIAL PARK
Mr. George Foley and Mr. David Hadley once again came before
the committee to present additional information concerning
the installation of play-ground equipment at Hunt Memorial
page 1
Park. They offered three options for consideration. The
options themselves illustrated features and cost. They also
sought to determine If any monies would be available from
the Recreation Department. The committee indicated there
are encumbered funds available that must be used by July 1,
1988. The committee directed Mr. Foley and Mr. Hadley to
seek the approval of the Town Manager and in addition, to
Investigate the cost of installation; the specific location
at the park and lastly a near-by completed installation for
viewing by the committee. The committee also mentioned that
additional financial support may still be forth-coming for
the project from an anonimous Boner.
A motion was made by Mr. J. Fallon that the Recreation
Committee recommend the purchase of Option 1 to be installed
with existing encumbered funds, the motion was seconded by
Mr. L. Warnock. The vote was unanimous.
A letter has been received from the Human Services Division
informing the Recreation Committee that there has been a
change in date for the review of the Human Services budget
by the Finance Committee. The new date is March 14.
A letter has been received from the Summer Youth Employment
Agency indicating they have personnel for summer employment.
A letter from the Reading School Committee waiving the
$10.00 energy fee charged to the Spinning Wheel has been
received.
Two letters have been received from the Music Performance
Trust Fund, acknowledging receipt of payments from the
Reading Recreation Committee for the Summer concerts.
A letter has been received from Beth White O'Connor
requesting consideration for appointment to the Recreation
Committee. A letter of acknowledgement will be sent.
CORRESPONDENCE TABLED
FITNESS TRAIL
Mr. Larry Warnock presented a study concerning the
Installation of the Fitness Trail. His study Included
viewing installations in surrounding communities. He
recommended that the Fitness Trail be located in the Birch
Meadow area; constructed of pressure treated lumber, with
consideration being given to disabled persons who may wish

to use the facilities. He feels the trail should be a mile
in length, comprising 20 fitness stations. The cost will
be in the vicinity of $14,400.00
Mr. Warnock further stated that complete information
concerning the trail should be published so that the entire
community is aware of It and how it should be used.
The sub-committee will be meeting the week of March 14
concerning this proposal.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter has been received from Mr. Robert Kinzler
concerning the development of Batchelder Field for added
recreational activity. The committee directed Chris
Copeland to reply to Mr. Kinzler acknowledging his concerns.
As a point of information, a letter from Mr. Bill Carroll
has been received regarding his continued interest In a
Basketball Clinic.
A letter has been received from Mr. Peter Moscariello,
representing The John Doherty Baseball Clinic. He has also
indicated an interest in running a summer program.
There are conflicting dates concerning these two Clinics
that must be dealt with before approval can be given.
READING MEN'S SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION
Mr. Carroll was unable to attend this evenings meeting, and
will be Invited to attend the committees next meeting on
April 15,. At that time the use of fields, pool and fees
will be discussed.
OLD BUSINESS
Chris Copeland informed the committee that Spring schedule
conflicts have been resolved and a new calendar of events
will be forth-coming.
Middlesex League - Girls Softball
The committee expressed concern regarding Middlesex League
rules and the last inning's starting time. Past starting
time for the last inning, has been at 5:30, Middlesex Rules
and Regulations state 5:45. This time has presented a
problem in the past, therefore the committee would like the
time to continue to be 5:30. The committee would also like
copies of Middlesex League Rules and Regulations sent to all
committee members as soon as possible.
Soccer - Sturgis Field Mr. Boyd will be invited to the
next meeting of the Recreation Committee to clarify the use
of Sturgis Field, re Soccer. It was originally thought that
the field would not be used because of declining enrollment
in Soccer. That thought seems to have changed.
A request for use of a field on May 1, 1988 from 2 p.m. to 5
p.m. has been received from a Reading citizen. The use of
Killam will be granted. (Rain date will be May 15).
Summer Music requests are in. It has been suggested a
change in music might be in order.
NEW BUSINESS
A Sub t.ouffni ttee for a Master Park Plan Is In order, with Mr.
J. Connelly, Mr. P. Hichborn, and Mr. J. Fallon as committee
menbers.
Mr. Connelly informed the committee of the success of the
Winter Basketball teams. He was most complimentary to Chris
Copeland for her willingness to jump in and help when
needed. He further complimented Chris in the manner in
which she supervised the handling and scheduling for the
teams.
There being no further business, Mr. Hughes made a motion
that the meeting should adjourn, Mr. Connelly seconded it.
The vote was unanimous. The meeting adjourned at 9:40 P.M.

February Monthly Report
Mr. Paul Buckley, division coordinator for the 5th and 6th grade boys
in the Sunday League of the Reading Youth Basketball League, who died
in an automobile accident February 17, was honored Sunday, February 21,
with a moment of silence during each of the four sessions. Paul will
be remembered for his efforts with the youth of Reading.
JP Mr.,Larry Warnock was welcomed by all members of the Recreation Committee
at his first meeting, February 10, 1988.
* Use and accessibility of the Town Forest was discussed and formalized by
Beth MacKillop, George Perry, and the supervisor and submitted to the
Town Manager.
* February 28th's X-Country Ski Day at the Town Forest, a joint effort
with the Conservation Commission, was rescheduled to March 6, 1988, because
of inclement weather.
* Bill Hughes and the supervisor have been participating on the MPAC Master
Plan Advisory Council.
Youth Basketball - The Travel Team program finished their home game
schedule February 27, 1988. Boys teams in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades
will be participating in Winchester March 5th and the 8th grade team
will also participate at a Marlboro tournament at the end of March.
Sunday League has remained a strong program. Leagues are now in their
playoff schedules through March 20, 1988.
Open Rec continued its schedule Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings
at the Field House from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and experienced, slightly
larger attendance at the end of the month with the onset of warmer
weather approaching. Open Rec will continue through the end of March.
