HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-12-13 Recreation Committee MinutesTown of Reading Reading, Massachusetts 01867-2693 (617) 942-0500 RECREATION DEPARTMENT 16 LOWELL STREET RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES The meeting of the Recreation Committee came to order at 7:40 PM at the meeting room of the Reading Public Library on Wednesday, December 13, 1989. Present at the meeting were Committee members Fallon, Connelly, Fotino, O'Connor, Kaminer, Williams, Pacino, McGrath, Sullivan, Conover, and Mullen. Citizens present were, Peter Moscariello, Edward Leyton, William Post, and Sandra Sar- cone. Winter Baseball Clinic: Peter Moscariello, head coach Reading High School baseball team, requested the use of the Hawkes Field House to conduct the Reading Baseball School. Dates requested were February 19-23, 1990, from 1:30 - 3:30 PM each day. Mos- cariello stated that Feb. 19th (Monday) was a federal holiday, therefore maintenance workers at the field house would have to be compensated for that day. He requested that, in light of the Rec. Com. fee of his gross being 15% up from 10%, that perhaps the Recreation Dept. could cover the maintenance cost for the holiday Feb. 19th. The request was tabled, pending further detail on actual cost. Mr. Moscariello also requested field house use for his baseball school to be held in July. That re- quest was also tabled with discussion to continue at a future date. A motion was made by Joe Connelly to grant the Reading Baseball School use of the field house from Feb. 19 thru 23, 1990, 1:30 3:30 PM. A 15% user fee to be assessed. The motion passed 6:0, John Pacino not voting. Edward Leyton, Varsity Coach, Reading H.S. Girl's Basketball. Summer Girls Basketball Camp: Mr. Leyton presented a written proposal for such at the November meeting. It would be a clinic for girls in grades 6,7,8 of the previous year. Mr. Leyton is hoping for approximately 25-40 participants, at a cost of $40-50 per person. He requested the use of the girl's gym for the last week of June (beginning the 25th) 1990. Motion made by D. Fotino to approve the use of the girl's gym by the Ed Leyton Basketball Clinic for the dates June 25-29 in the afternoons. Seconded by B. W. O'Connor Motion passed 7:0. Summer Baseball Program: Mr. William Post appeared to express his concern of the decline in the quality of the town sponsored baseball clinic. He voiced these concerns to former supervisor Copeland this summer, yet the information was not forwarded to the committee. Mr. Post was requested by J. Fallon to submit these concerns to the committee in a formal written form. Mr. Post will appear before the committee at a later date with more information. Birch Meadow PTO: Sandra Sarcone, representing the Birch Meadow PTO, appeared with a request for the field house to host a benefit fair for the school and the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. Date requested, Feb. 15th - Thurs. Mrs. Sarcone is required to clear this date with Lois Savage of the School Department. Motion made by J. Pacino to waive the open recrea- tion on Thurs. Feb. 15th. Seconded by J. Connelly. Vote - Unan- imous. PUBLIC MEETING - User Fee $5.00 S. Collins representing Reading Youth Soccer presented three re- quests. 1.RYS should be charged for 1 field of use, not 3, even though 3 games are played in the Birch Meadow Area. The playing fields are reduced in size for the younger teams. 2. Charge adult leagues more because some adults don't have children participating in sports, they have a heavier use than children & the children's program is recreational and educational. 3. Charge more for those who play at night. (electricity) Motion made by J. Pacino to endorse the field user raise to $5.00, seconded by -4B.W. O'Connor. Yea 6, Nay 1. Amendment to mo- tion made by M. Williams, Adult fee 6, Child fee 4. Seconded by J. Fallon. Vote, Yea 1, Nay 6. J. Connelly reported to the committee about Winter Basketball and its success. B. O'Connor discussed the problem of hockey playing on the public skating areas. Supervisory position is in search process. J. Fallon, J. Con- nelly, K. Kaminer will subcommittee to review applicants. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 PM.
