RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
The meeting of the Recreation Committee came to order at 7:40 PM
at the meeting room of the Reading Public Library on Wednesday,
December 13, 1989. Present at the meeting were Committee members
Fallon, Connelly, Fotino, O'Connor, Kaminer, Williams, Pacino,
McGrath, Sullivan, Conover, and Mullen. Citizens present were,
Peter Moscariello, Edward Leyton, William Post, and Sandra Sar-
cone.
Winter Baseball Clinic: Peter Moscariello, head coach Reading
High School baseball team, requested the use of the Hawkes Field
House to conduct the Reading Baseball School. Dates requested
were February 19-23, 1990, from 1:30 - 3:30 PM each day. Mos-
cariello stated that Feb. 19th (Monday) was a federal holiday,
therefore maintenance workers at the field house would have to be
compensated for that day. He requested that, in light of the
Rec. Com. fee of his gross being 15% up from 10%, that perhaps
the Recreation Dept. could cover the maintenance cost for the
holiday Feb. 19th. The request was tabled, pending further
detail on actual cost. Mr. Moscariello also requested field
house use for his baseball school to be held in July. That re-
quest was also tabled with discussion to continue at a future
date.
A motion was made by Joe Connelly to grant the Reading Baseball
School use of the field house from Feb. 19 thru 23, 1990, 1:30
3:30 PM. A 15% user fee to be assessed. The motion passed 6:0,
John Pacino not voting.
Edward Leyton, Varsity Coach, Reading H.S. Girl's Basketball.
Summer Girls Basketball Camp: Mr. Leyton presented a written
proposal for such at the November meeting. It would be a clinic
for girls in grades 6,7,8 of the previous year. Mr. Leyton is
hoping for approximately 25-40 participants, at a cost of $40-50
per person. He requested the use of the girl's gym for the last
week of June (beginning the 25th) 1990. Motion made by D. Fotino
to approve the use of the girl's gym by the Ed Leyton Basketball
Clinic for the dates June 25-29 in the afternoons. Seconded by B.
W. O'Connor
Motion passed 7:0.
Summer Baseball Program: Mr. William Post appeared to express
his concern of the decline in the quality of the town sponsored
baseball clinic. He voiced these concerns to former supervisor
Copeland this summer, yet the information was not forwarded to
the committee. Mr. Post was requested by J. Fallon to submit
these concerns to the committee in a formal written form. Mr.
Post will appear before the committee at a later date with more
information.

PTO, appeared with a request for the field house to host a
benefit fair for the school and the Massachusetts Coalition for
the Homeless. Date requested, Feb. 15th - Thurs. Mrs. Sarcone
is required to clear this date with Lois Savage of the School
Department. Motion made by J. Pacino to waive the open recrea-
tion on Thurs. Feb. 15th. Seconded by J. Connelly. Vote - Unan-
imous.
PUBLIC MEETING - User Fee $5.00
S. Collins representing Reading Youth Soccer presented three re-
quests.
1.RYS should be charged for 1 field of use, not 3, even though 3
games are played in the Birch Meadow Area. The playing
fields are reduced in size for the younger teams.
2. Charge adult leagues more because some adults don't have
children participating in sports, they have a heavier use
than children & the children's program is recreational and
educational.
3. Charge more for those who play at night. (electricity)
Motion made by J. Pacino to endorse the field user raise to
$5.00, seconded by -4B.W. O'Connor. Yea 6, Nay 1. Amendment to mo-
tion made by M. Williams, Adult fee 6, Child fee 4. Seconded by
J. Fallon. Vote, Yea 1, Nay 6.
