HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-03-14 Recreation Committee MinutesRECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES MARCH 14, 1990 The meeting was called to order by Chairman Fallon at 7:32. In attendance were members Fotino, Connelly, Pacino, Kaminer, and Swymer, associate members Mullin, McGrath, Conover and Sullivan, Recreation Supervisor Giordano, and citizens William Carroll and Peter Moscaiello. (Ruth Cogan at 9:OOP.M.) First order of Business was the approval of Minutes of Recreation meeting of February 19,1990. Motion for approval by Pacino. Seconded by Fotino 6-0-0. A letter with payment from Peter Moscariello for February Baseball camp was reviewed. Peter Moscariello spoke before the Committee concerning summer baseball clinic to be called "Reading Baseball School". Dates requested were Mon. July 2, Tues. July 3, Thurs.- Sat. July 5,6,7. The times would be from 9 until 2. He requested use of Field House and one or two small diamonds. It would be a program for youngsters ages 6-12 and the tuition would be $80.00. At this time Giordano provided positive feedback about the program as did member Connelly. Motion to approve the Baseball School with the 15% fee and proper accounting record to Recreation Committee moved by Pacino, seconded by Fotino 6-0-0. William Carroll spoke before the Committee Concerning Summer Bas- ketball School. He requested the Field House from June 25 until June 30 from 8:45 A.M. until 3:30. Giordano mentioned the pos- sibility of a late school closing (June 25 for students, and June 26 for Faculty). This was based on a conversation with the Su- perintendent of School's office. This date seemed unlikely in the opinion of many members of the committee. However, if the date causes a problem, alternative dates will be examined. Motion to approve the request for a Basketball School with the 15% fee and appropriate bookkeeping was moved by Swymer, seconded by Fotino 6-0-0. . William Carroll has some questions concerning the Softball Schedule which were answered. Sub-committee Reports: Joseph Connelly chair of the Field Sub-committee made the report. He stressed that the first page was very important detailing the gt 1 use of Sturgis Park and Batchelder Field. 1 Chair Fallon requested that actual assignments be reviewed page by page. Fotino and Swymer questioned the assignation of Sturgis Park to Youth Baseball on Sundays. It was explained that it was assigned due to being moved out of Eaton in favor of Women's Softball. However, Sturgis is still available for General use and make-up through the Recreation office. The Field Spring and Summer Field assignments were presented with the following changes Junior Varsity Baseball- Monday, May 28 - no inning to start after 1:15. Senior League Baseball 4/21 until 6/23 Monday, May 28 Washington Park 1:30 - Dusk Youth Baseball - Sturgis Park - Sundays- Subject to supervisor's clearance Men's Softball - Sturgis & Barrows 6/23 & 6/24 - 9:00 A.M. until Dusk - only with approval of Softball. Reading Men's Softball - Birch Meadow - Tennis Court Field C -Sunday, August 5 . 9:A.M - Dusk Reading United Soccer - Spring Program - 3/31 to 6/24 - Parker Middle School - lower field Northeast Baseball 6/23 to 8/31 Legion Baseball 6/23 to 7/30 P.O.N.Y. 6/23 to 8/11 Barbo Reupholstry - Pearl St. Field Motion to accept Field assignments by Pacino, seconded by Swymer. 6-0-0 Field use requests denied were reviewed and Supervisor instructed to invite all those being sent denial letter the opportunity to reapply once master schedule is drawn up. The Killam School Field was discussed as a possible field for use when there is a request by a group. Mr. McGrath reported that Bandstand Sub-committee had nothing to support since Mr. William Hughes has not got back to them with necessary information. Steven Sullivan reported that the Softball Shack sub committee is progressing along with its plans and trenches will be dug and foundation poured by 3/31. Giordano went over the Supervisor's Report in detail and answered any questions. 2 John Fallon will go before Town Meeting and question line items. He asked for the support of Recreation Members to be at the meet- ing and speak on behalf of the budget. Giordano updated the Friend's Program. The state has given a verbal o.k., the turn-around time for paper work will be 3 to 4 weeks. Giordano met with Town Manager and Town Accountant on a revolving account for Recreation. They supported this concept and wrote a resolution to be presented by Chairperson Fallon before Special Town Meeting requesting the establishment of this account. Moved to support Mr. Fallon's request for a Revolving Account by Connelly, seconded by Fotino. 6-0-0. Funding for the Sunday Evening Concerts was discussed. In addi- tion to the Arts Council application, the Lion's Club will provide some funding. It was suggested by Mr. Fotino that the supervisor go before the Lion's and request funding for one con- cert. Giordano said he would. Fallon mentioned soliciting the business community for Sponsor- ship of the Series. Giordano notified that a new secretary, Ginger Butler, was hired for Recreation, and she will begin work on March 19. Giordano brought to the Committee a request from Ms. Leslie Sheehan to run a clinic- demonstration in August to benefit the Boston University Tennis Team. 15% of the proceeds will be returned to the Town. This is to be held for four hours, one day in August on a Saturday or Sunday. Move to approve request by Swymer, seconded by Fotino. 6-0-0 The issue of fund raising through the Pepsi-Cola Company was brought up by Conover. The Committee decided that it should be handled through the "Friends" group. Fotino questioned the absence of members of the Recreation Com- mittee and the hardship it places on the other members and asked what can be done. The Rules and by-laws were explained.
