HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-03-11 Recreation Committee MinutesRecreation Minutes March 11, 1992 A meeting of the Recreation committee was called to order on March 11, 1992 at 7:30pm in the Arnold Berger room of the Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St. Reading. Committee members present in- cluded Chairman Joseph Giordano, Vice Chairman Kate Kaminer, John Fallon, Fred Conover, John Pacino, Tom Zaya, Steve Sullivan, Tom McGrath, Lorraine Salter, and Ed Hanley. Lesley Wexler, Recrea- tion Supervisor, was also in attendance. Under the first order of business, the minutes of February 5th were reviewed. A change was made to page four, 5th paragraph from the bottom. The change was in the original vote tally of 0-5-2, with the actual vote being 5-0-1 The minutes were ap- proved with changes. J. Fallon made the motion to accept, John Pacino seconded. A vote of 7-0-1 was recorded. Both correspondence and the Supervisor's report were reviewed next. The Supervisor's report was accepted with a motion made by John Pacino. The motion was seconded by K. Kamineer and then ap- proved unanimously with a vote of 8-0-0. Chairman Joseph Giordano briefly discussed Camp Hope, asking if the Recreation Supervisor and Committee Members would be allowed to view the camp in operation. Lorraine Salter wondered if the Committee could possibly speak with families involved. It was decided to address these and other concerns to EMARC, through the assistance of the Human Services Director. AT 8pm , a Public Hearing was held. Mr. Giordano,read the legal notice for the hearing and welcomed Peter Moscariello to begin the discussion. Mr. Moscariello reviewed his proposal for the cage and the various areas of Morton Field where it might be built. P. Moscariello stated that he and several neighbors of the park scouted the right field for a sight. All present found it unac- ceptable, being too close to the Tennis Courts and Bancroft Ave. P. Moscariello asked that the vote for construction in right field be reconsidered, as he felt it would be better in left field area. Several abutters spoke for and against the structure. Selectman George Hines spoke in favor of the cage and expressed that he did not believe it would be used only by baseball and would not be a nuisance at all. Mr. Fallon madea motion to reconsider the vote of February 5th meeting which approves construction in right field of the park. The motion was seconded by F. Conover. A vote was not taken at this point. J. Pacino asked why P. Moscariello was against the right field - site. Coach Moscariello stated that it would be to close to the Tennis Courts and Bancroft Ave. He also stated that the cage will benefit lots of kids and help with hitting and pitching skills. At 8:40pm the Public Hearing was officially closed. J. Fallon moved to reconsider the vote, this was seconded by Fred Conover. The motion was defeated with a vote Of 4-4-0 with the cage remaining in the right field area. At 8:50pm field assignments were reviewed by J. Fallon. As the schedule was discussed, J. Fallon moved that a special request be granted for Men's Softball to have an early start on 8/2 & 9/20 beginning at gam. The motion was seconded by T. McGrath and ap- proved with a vote of 8-0-0. John Fallon made another motion to let Youth Baseball have an early start on 5/17 & 5/31, beginning at 9am. This was seconded by T. McGrath and approved 5-2-1. John Fallon made a motion to use Hunt Memorial Park on 6/7 for All-Star games. Tom McGrath seconded the motion, and it passed 7-0-1. Soccer was discussed last, as it was stated that there was some confusion with the fields requested. Fred Conover made a motion that soccer get the same treatment that other programs get. This was seconded by Lorraine Salter and passed with a vote of 7-0-1. The Schena Soccer request was reviewed. F. Conover made a motion to table the request until we have summer soccer results. This was seconded by S. Sullivan and passed 7-0-1. At 10:15, discussion regarding field requests ended. It was noted that the proposal for privitization of the pool was not accepted and that the Recreation Division will still run the facility. K. Kaminer and L Salter stated that they spoke with Peter Hechenbleikner regarding the Teen Center, and that his response was positive. Under New Business, J. Giordano asked the Committee for a Summer- fest Liason. No Committee memberswere interested. At 10:50, F. Conover made a motion to adjourn which was seconded by K. Kaminer. A vote of 7-0-1 was recorded to adjourn. Respectfully Submitted,
