RECREATION MINUTES
May 13, 1992
A meeting of the Recreation Committee was held on May 13, 1992 in
the Arnold Berger Room at Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St., Read-
ing, MA. Committee members present included Chairman Joseph
Giordano, Vice Chairman Kate Kaminer, John Pacino, John Fallon,
Lorraine Salter, Fred Conover, Tom Zaya, and Ed Hanley. Also in
attendance was Lesley Wexler, Recreation Supervisor. Mr. Steve
Sullivan and Mr. Tom McGrath arrived late.
A motion to accept the minutes of the meeting on April 8th was
made by Kate Kaminer. The motion was seconded by John Pacino,
and passed with a vote of 6-0-1.
Ms..Wexler summarized her Supervisor's report. Mr. John Pacino
volunteered to work a Sunday Evening Concert if Ms. Wexler needed
the time off. Mr. John Fallon requested that Guarino's Pool Com-
pany not pump water from the Grant Municipal Pool into the Tennis
Court. Field. A motion to accept the Supervisor's Report was made
by John Fallon and 2nd by Fred Conover. The motion passed 7-0-0.
At 7:46 pm correspondence was briefly reviewed.
At 7:47 pm, Mr. David Roy of Men's Baseball reviewed a request
they previously submitted. Mr. Roy specifically requested an
early start time of 10:00am on Sundays. Mr. Roy explained the
reason for the early start is that participants come from all
over the area.
Mr. Giordano stated that the neighbors and families in that area
are not fond of early starts and felt the committee should stay
with the original Noon start.
Lorraine Salter made a motion to let the Mariners have a permit
for 11am (practice) with games to start at Noon. Kate Kaminer
seconded the motion. The motion was defeated 3-5-0.
John Fallon made a motion for the Mariners to start at Noon. The
motion was seconded by Fred.Conover, and passed 7-0-0.
AT 8:10pm, Dan Jones appeared before the Committee to run a
softball tournament under the jurisdiction of Men's Softball on
the weekend of the 26th. Joe Giordano reviewed the initial re-
quest presented to him by Jones, which stated that Jones wanted
to run a separate tournament exclusive of Men's Softball.

Dan Jones responded by stating that for several reasons, the
tournament would need to be run through Men's Softball. Dan said
that $500 would be donated to the Recreation Division on behalf
of the tournament.
Chairman Joe Giordano stated that he had talked with Bill Carroll
in regards to the tournament, and that Bill did not want to give
up his permits to Dan Jones.
Dan Jones.said that Commissioner Carroll now agrees to run the
tournament if it is run through Men's Softball.
Mr. John Fallon made a motion to accept the tournament request,
given that a written request is submitted. The motion was
seconded by Fred Conover, and passed with a vote of 7-1-0--

Chairman Giordano suggested that Ms. Conboy come back next year
when votes on early starts are made.
Under New Business, Lesley Wexler reviewed her Summer programs,
stating that everything was running well.
Joe Giordano reviewed the Pop Warner proposal about lighting the
practice field at Birch Meadow. Giordano said an Open Hearing
would need to be held at the next meeting with Pop Warner
presenting a more specific plan.
Under Old Business, Mr. Giordano said the Community Clean up Day
was a success.
Lorraine Salter said the Tennis Tournament was filling up well.
Ed Hanley stated that he had gone to Reading Trophy and Shirt and
was able to get trophies at half price.
Kate Kaminer spoke briefly about the teen Center project, and
said it was moving along well. John Fallon commended Kate and
Lorraine for their efforts and hard work.
Joe Giordano said he would like to see the Friends of Reading
Recreation run a concession stand at the pool this summer.

Tom McGrath stated that Soccer was granted Mondays at Sturgis
Park.
A motion to adjourn was made at 10:07 by John Fallon. Kate
Kaminer seconded the motion to adjourn, and it passed.7-0-0.
