in the Arnold Berger Room at Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St.,
Reading, Ma. Committee members present included Chairman Joseph
Giordano, Edward Hanley, John Pacino, Steven Sullivan, Tom Zaya,
Tom McGrath, Lorraine Salter, and Fred Conover. Also in_atten-
dance was Recreation Supervisor, Lesley Wexler. Gary Roberts ar-
rived late.
At 7:34, an Open Hearing was called to order regarding the light-
ing of the Practice Field. Joe Giordano read the legal notice,
after which Sharon Drillio., a representative of Pop Warner
presented the Light Proposal. She stated that her organization
would like lights erected at the practice football field due to
the current field they are using (Castine) is said to be very
swampy and buggy.
The cost, Ms Drillio stated, would be $473/pole. Many neighbors
expressed concerned about the lights shining in their houses and
who woulld pay for the lights.
Mr. Giordano stated that Pop Warner would pay, and the Light
Dept. would bill them directly.
Mr. Dave Blanchard, a representative from soccer, was concerned
about their field time at the area. Bob Drillio of Pop Warner
said they would not take their field space.
J. Pacino asked Sharon Drillio if Pop Warner could practice at
Austin Prep. Sharno said no because it is occupied.
J. Pacino asked what the next step would be to approve the light-
ing. J. Giordano said it would next have to go to the Town
Manager and then to the Selectmen. The Open Hearing closed offi-
cially at 8:10.
A break in the agenda occured at 8:12pm. A motion was made by
Tom McGrath to table motion on the Public Hearing due to a new
Recreation Board coming in July. This was seconded by Mrs. Sal-
ter. Mr. Giordano said he would like more specifics on the
project, and Fred Conover said he would like to see a cost out,
and how it would be covered. The motion passed 5-0-1.
Joe Giordano, Chairman, said he will request Peter Hechenbleikner
to ask Light Dept. to give more information. Fred Conover made a
motion to have the Town Manager ask the Light Dept to give Pop
Warner more information. This was seconded by John Pacino and
passe unanimously with a vote of 6-0-0.

Under the second order of business the Supervisor's Report was
reviewed. Fred Conover made a motion to approve the report,
which was seconded by Steve Sullivan. The motion passed 6-0-0.
Joe Giordano reviewed correspondence next. Two letters of resig-
nations were read. One from John Fallon, and one from Tom
McGrath. The letters were accepted with reservation.
Under Old Business, the Tennis Tournament was reviewed,.and it
was stated that it was all set to go.
The Teen Center Sub-Committee reported to the Committee next. It
was stated that Pearl St. School was going to be boarded up and
they were not sure where they would run the center. A mission
statement for the project was developed and the "Battle of the
Bands" concert is set up for August 26th.
In regards to the concession stand, nothing firm or concrete has
been established.
Under Committee vacancies, Fred Conover and John Pacino are reap-
plying for appointments, John Fallon and Tom McGrath are not. It
will be recommended that Mr. Hanley and Mr. Zaya be appointed to
full time membership. The appointments are to be made next Tues-
day night. Joe Giordano asked if anyone would like to become
Chairman, and to think about it.
Joe Giordano read regulations regarding the batting cage and
stated that they would be posted on the cage. Chairman Giordano
reviewed an application from Ralph Noe for a peddlars license to
sell food at Men's Softball Tournament. It was stated that Bill
Carroll is in favor and that Peter Hechenbleikner would like the
Recreation Committee's input. It was the Committee's general
feeling to approve this permit.
The Softball Shack was mentioned next. Joe Giordano stated that
he spoke with Bill Carroll in regards to the building. Bill Car-
roll said that water hook up, electricity lines, and a floor was
all that was needed and that they were working on it. Steve Sul-
livan said that the bleachers which were removed to build the
shack will be put back yet he needs to know where.
A motion to adjourn was made by Fred Conover and seconded by'
Steve Sullivan.
