July 8, 1992
A meeting of the Recreation Committee was held on July 8, 1992 in
the Arnold Berger Room at Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St., Read-
ing, MA. Committee members present included Vice Chairman Kate
Kaminer, Steve Sullivan, John Pacino, Susan Cavichi, Gordon
Richards, Lorraine Salter, Fred Conover and Gary Roberts. Ed
Hanley and Tom Zaya arrived late.
At 7:40pm the meeting was called to order. New members were in-
troduced, Gordon Richards and Susan Cavvichi (voting members) and
Karl McFadden (associate member). It was also announced that Mr.
Ed Hanley was promoted to voting member of the Recreation Com-
mittee.
Next on the agenda was the approval of the minutes from the June
10 meeting. A motion to accept the minutes was made by John
Pacino and seconded by Steve Sullivan- Before the minutes were
voted on,. Fred Conover asked who on the committee was interested
in being chairperson. Lorraine Salter stated that she would like
to see Mr. Giordano as chairman for the upcoming year, especially
as the Supervisor is leaving. The discussion was closed as the
Committee was not sure how Chairman Giordano would feel about
staying on for another term. A vote to approve the minutes of
June 10th was then taken, the minutes were approved 7-0-0.
Under the third order of business, the Supervisor's report was
reviewed. The Committee felt that, a memo to Peter regarding a
potential avenue to fund major repairs at the pool.
A motion to approve the Supervisor's report was made by John
Pacino, which was seconded by Steve Sullivan. The Committee
voted to approve the report . 7-0-0.
Sub Committee reports were reviewed next. The first Sub-
Committee to review their progress was the Teen Center Sub-
Committee. Kate Kaminer, a member of the Committee stated that a
"Battle of the Bands" concert is scheduled for August 26th. The
Tennis Tournament Sub-Committee stated that the tournament was a
success, netting $1,200. It was added that the courts at Birch
Meadow are in poor shape and that new nets were very necessary.
Fred made a motion to pursue the tennis court concerns and report
back to the committee. The motion was seconded by Lorraine Sal-
ter. The motion passed with a vote of 8-0-0.

Next on the agenda, Sharon Drillio explained the Pop Warner
proposal to erect lights at the practice football field. Sharon
stated that funds were available to do the work. Steve Sullivan
made a motion to accept the proposal, John Pacino seconded the
motion, yet expressed some concerns. The motion passed 7-0-1.
Jeanette Rivers, a Birch Meadow resident stated that she was con-
cerned about people playing volleyball very close to her house.
It was explained to Mrs.Rivers that the people had been asked to
stop and they said they would. Mrs. Rivers said she would call
the Recreation Division if they did not.
Ruth Cogan appeared before the committee next to discuss food
vendor permits during recreational events. Ms. Cogan stated that
a committee involving the Police, Town Counsel, Health Dept. and
Recreation committee would be established to work on a vendor
policy. Steve Sullivan and Ed Hanley agreed to be members of
that committee.
Joe Giordano arrived late at 9:30.
Under New Business, Joe Giordano stated that phone calls had been
made to committee members homes in regards to poles being in-
stalled at Little League Park. The poles, it appeared had been
erected for the purpose of putting up a lighted scoreboard. The
Town Manager gave approval for the project as he considered it an
improvement replacement. Chairman Giordano felt that construc-
tion of the scoreboard should have gone before the Recreation
Committee for approval of the concept, and then onto the
Selectmen for final acceptance.
John Pacino stated that he has heard there is a lot of protest
against the sign. Fred Conover stated that he would write a let-
ter regarding the scoreboard and the Committee's feelings in
regards to it.
Election of Chairperson to the Committee was the final order of
business. John Pacino made a motion to elect Joe Giordano as he
has done an excellent job representing our Town and Committee.
Mr. Giordano declined the motion. Fred Conover stated the'Com-
mittee are agreed that Joe was the best suited person for the
job. Joe Giordano again declined the position again. Fred Con-
over made a motion to table the election until the August meet-
ing. The motion was seconded by Ed Hanley. The Committee passed
the motion with a vote of 9-0-0.
Steve Sullivan made a motion to adjourn, Fred Conover seconded
the motion. A vote of 9-0-0 was made at 10:35pm to adjourn.
