HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-08-12 Recreation Committee MinutesRECREATION MINUTES AUGUST 12, 1992 A meeting of the Recreation Committee was called to order on August 12, 1992 at 7:30 pm in the Arnold Berger Room of Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St., Reading, Ma. Committee members present included Vice Chairman Kate Kaminer, Ed Hanley, John Pacino, Susan Cavvicchi, Gordon Richards, Steve Sullivan, Karl McFadden, Fred Conover and Tom Zaya arrived late. Lesley Wexler, Recrea- tion supervisor was also in attendance At 7:39, the meeting of the Recreation Committee was called to order. Under the first order of business, the minutes of the July 8th were approved. The motion to approve was made by John Pacino and seconded by Steve Sullivan. The motion passed with a vote of 6-0-0. John Pacino commended Fred Conover for writting a letter to the Selectmen regarding the committee's concerns regarding Hunt Memorial Park. Both the Supervisors Report and correspondence were reviewed next. The Supervisor answered questions regarding summer programs. Reading Citizen, Mr. Sudbay, reviewed concerns regarding vol- leyball playing on a small parcel of land near his home. The parcel, which logistically falls between Morton Field and Mr. Sudbay's home, has been used only as a buffer zone in the past. Susan Cavvicchi made a motion for the Recreation Supervisor to write a memo to the Town Manager requesting that the buffer zone not be used for Recreational purposes, and perhaps the Town could stop mowing the area to discourage use. The motion was seconded by John Pacino and passed with a vote of 7-0-0. Plans for installing playground equipment at Barrows School were reviewed. John Pacino made a motion to approve, Steve Sullivan 2nd the motion. The motion passed with a vote of 7-0-0. Next on the agenda, David Maddellena presented a proposal for a Summer Theater Program to be implemented'in 1993. The Committee asked David various questions in regards to curriculum, and specific lesson planning. Ed Hanley made a motion to approve the program, John Pacino seconded the motion. Committee Reports were reviewed next, with the Teen Center Fund Raiser reviewed first. It was stated that volunteers were needed for the Battle of the Bands Concert, and that the possibility of using Pearl St. as a Center location might still be an option. 1 Gary Roberts reviewed his progression with the Tennis Court Nets, stating that three new nets has been installed by D.P.W. The Food Vendor Subcommittee spoke next, reporting that they had met three weeks ago to discuss preliminary issues. The subcom- mittee decided that in the future, guidelines would need to be established in regards to permits. Under Old Business, Fred Conover reviewed the memo he had sent to the Selectmen regarding Hunt Memorial Park. Under New Business, Ed Hanley mentioned the possibility of Youth Soccer playing at Washington Park. Election of a new Chairperson was discussed next, it was decided to table the election until the next election. A motion to adjourn was made by Fred Conover at 9:35 pm, and seconded by Steve Sullivan. The motion passed with a vote of 8-0-0. Respectfully Submitted, Lesley Wexler Recreation Supervisor 2
