day, October 14, 1992. Present at the meeting were Joe Giordano,
Gordon Richards, John Pacino, Kate Kaminer, Tom Zaya, Ed Hanley,
Carl McFadden, Lorraine Salter, and Fred Conover.
Minutes of September 9, 1992 were approved 6:0:0 with two correc-
tions.
Acting Supervisor's Report: Giordano thanked Cogan for her work.
He also reminded everyone about the October 31 registration and
asked anyone who could work to contact Carl McFadden. It was
noted that the light box issue at Castine field has been
resolved. A discussion was held as to whether it would be
worthwhile to have the Woburn City Band do a make up concert in
November. The consensus was that there would be a good turnout. A
discussion was held about the Second Son Photography offering
their services for the Youth Basketball program. Hanley noted
that he has had problems with their administration. Giordano
noted that he brought them into Reading and feels that they do a
good job. McFadden had no problem with them doing the program. It
was noted that Dave Williams will be doing a bird watching trip
October 27. It was noted that he does a consistently good job.
The report was accepted 7:0:0.
Old Business: Richards noted that he was at the October 2 bon-
fire, that there were a lot of good feelings and no apparent
damage to the field.
The pool was closed by DPW on October 10 at a cost of $575. Wat-
son Brothers will do the remaining work.
The Parker After School program will not go ahead this year.
Teen Center Subcommittee - Salter noted they were charged $155
for custodians but were not charged fees for the day before.
Giordano memo'ed the Town Manager asking about progress regarding
the hiring a new Recreation Supervisor.
Giordano asked Sullivan and Richards to check on plans concerning
the ice rink re the master Park Plan. He noted that by Charter
the Recreation Committee assigns fields and implicit in this is
that the Committee should have a definite say.
Hunt Memorial Park - Conover, Salter, Kaminer, Richards the Town
Manager, Sally Hoyt and George Hines attended the meeting with
neighbors of Hunt Memorial Park. They felt that overall it was a
very productive meeting. They said that almost everything that
needed to be said was done so by the neighbors. Issues that were
raised were parking, early starts on Sunday (made clear that they
had permission for only one date for the All Star game), expan-
sion of Little League (park will be used five nights a week and
five games on Saturday), litter (not a current issue), portable
toilets (none will be allowed by consensus), scoreboard, food and
vending (should be restricted to the facility). It was also noted
that when the Recreation Committee votes on the field scheduling
that it should be a posted agenda item. They noted that the Town
Manager did a good job conducting the meeting.
Clinics that still owed the 15% were discussed. The Supervisor
was instructed to send another letter to them noting that they
were jeopardizing future cosponsorship.
Hanley asked whether there were any plans for the winter tennis
program. Cogan noted that that organization had not contacted us
as of this time.
It was noted that there was a mistake on the sheet with the
balances for each summer program. It will be corrected for the
next meeting.
McFadden noted that because he was adding another girls travel
team and he expected increased enrollment to the Youth Basketball
program he would need the girls gym on Sundays. He noted that
the YMCA had also requested that space for Sundays. He said that
the School Dept's preference order was 1) school dept 2) Town 3)
85% Reading 4) out of town. Giordano said that he would contact
Dr. Munnelly and was directed to try to accommodate both
programs.
Old Business: Giordano said that there had been no further ac-
tion on the future of the Supervisor's position. he had sent a
memo to the Town Manager.
The letter from John Upton was noted. Giordano asked if anyone
had ideas for cable programs they should contact John.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 pm
