Tuesday, April 6, 1993 in the upstairs Conference Room of the
Senior Center at 49 Pleasant Street. Present at the meeting were
members Kate Kaminer, Joe Giordano, John Pacino, Steve Sullivan,
Gordon Richards, Sue Cavvichi, Lorraine Salter, Ed Hanley and
Fred Conover, Associate Members Carl McFadden and Tom Zaya; staff
Ruth Cogan and Peter Hechenbleikner; guests Steve Kajander, David
Swymter, Renee Dion, Margaret Cowell, Barbara Luddy, Robin
D'Antona, Diane Freed, Anita Valentine.
Giordano noted that he did not want the meeting schedule to
change. Kaminer requested that discussion wait until New Busi-
ness.
Hechenbleikner introduced Steve Kajander as the finalist for the
position of Recreation Supervisor and gave an overview of the
selection process. Kajander gave a summary of his background.
Questions were asked of Kajander by Sullivan, Cavvichi and
Pacino.
Giordano clarified that he did not request that the schedule of
meetings be changed and that he did not know why it was on the
agenda. Salter made a motion to withdraw that request, seconded
by Pacino. Motion passed 8:0:0.
Approval of the minutes of March 10, 1993 were tabled as they
were inadvertently omitted from the packet.
Supervisor's Report was accepted 8:0:0.
New Business
A discussion was held concerning the large waiting lists for the
Summer Camp and the reduction of REAP reserved spots from 25 to
15. Dion, Luddy, Swymter made comments in favor of 25 spaces
reserved for REAP. Giordano asked D'Antona whether she would
make the financial commitment to 100 spaces (25 per session) even
if she did not fill them. D'Antona agreed to this. Conover
moved that the number of spaces per session be increased with a
cap of 120 spaces per session by eliminating 3 swim lessons for
the public per session, seconded by Hanley. Motion passed 8:0:0.
open Recreation program discussion was tabled to the next meet-
ing.
Assignment of fields for the summer - Richards noted that there
was a conflict with Lucerto's new baseball league and Men's
Softball. It was noted that Summer Little League would have
Eaton on Tuesday and Thursdays, Friday at the Tennis Court Field
and one night at Hunt (their choice). Men's Softball would have
Eaton Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, the rest as requested. Sum-
mer girl's sofball was approved as requested except for the July
14-17 (the dates of the Carnival). The remainder of the fields
were recommended to be approved as requested. Motion to approve
the fields as recommended by the subcommittee by Conover,
seconded by Giordano. Motion approved 7:0:0
The moratorium on using the fields due to the excessive rains was
deferred to the Department of Public Works per the instruction of
the Town Manager.
A request had been made by the Muscular Dystrophy Association for
fields for a weekend in April with a waiver of the fees. Gior-
dano made a motion to waive the fee, seconded by Conover. Motion
passed 5:3:0.
Cogan noted that there was a vacancy in the Administrative Assis-
tant position in the Department. Ginger Butler, the Recreation
Principal Clerk will be working an extra half day a week to help
cover the time.
Old Business
Teen Center Committee report was given by Salter. Thanks were
given to McFadden for the idea of the Patriots basketball game as
a fundraiser on April 15. It will be cosponsored by the Reading
Girls Basketball with Reading Recreation. All profits will go to
the Teen Center. Discussion was held concerning the Boosters
food concession versus Papa Gino's. The Boosters will not agree
to the 150 of gross return to Recreation, Papa Gino's has agreed
to 20%. Kaminer and Cavvichi will meet with Dr. Munnelly. The
Committee agreed to go with Papa Gino's if the Boosters would not
agree to the Recreation's standing policy of 15% of gross profit
as a return. The policy of deciding who would get courtesy tick-
ets was delegated to the Teen Committee. John Upton, Conover,
Richards and Kaminer agreed to play for Recreation.
Master Recreation Park Subcommittee report - no report as Pacino
was in the Bear Hill meeting.
Tennis Tournament - The date has changed to June 11 - 13 so as
not to conflict with Meadowbrook. Motion made by Salter,
seconded by Giordano for this date. Motion passed unanimously.
