Notes from May 12, 1993
There was a posted meeting of the Recreation Committee for 7:30
pm Wednesday, May 12, 1993. However, there was not a quorum
present. The following members were present: Kate Kaminer, Fred
Conover, Susan Cavvichi, Lorraine Salter. The following As-
sociate Members were present: Carl McFadden, Tom Zaya and Gary
Roberts. Also present were Ruth Cogan, Supervisor Steve Kajander,
and guest Sharon Drillio.
It was decided by consensus that the group would go over items on
the agenda but no action would be taken.
Minutes: Cogan asked if anyone had any questions or corrections
for the minutes. She had a question about the girls softball
league's assignment with Sturgis and asked if anyone had a
specific recollection of that vote. No one did; she will check
their Saturday and Sunday schedule..
Fence for Sturgis Park softball field: Sharon Drillio noted how
a coach had been hit by a softball last year. She passed around
the estimate of $639 to install the fence noting the the League
would pay for the fence with the Drillios paying any balance the
League could not afford. Kaminer noted that she and Cogan had
gone to the site and thought it was a good idea. However, she
felt that in light of past issues with neighbors it was important
that neighbors have the opportunity to comment. She said that
she would call an extra meeting for next Wednesday, May 19 at
7:30 to take a vote on this fence.
Supervisor's Report: Cogan went over the report included in the
packet. She also updated the status of the camp and swimming
registrations. Kate gave a summary of her meeting with Steve and
Jesse Mraz about Summer fest. She noted that Mraz seemed to be
making an effort to smooth relations between the two groups and
encouraged the Committee's participation in Summerfest. Discus-
sion included have the Theatre in the Green and Touch of Class
events at that time advertised as part of Summerfest. In addi-
tion, a pie in the face booth was discussed. It will be put on
the May 19 agenda for a vote.
Tennis Tournament: Salter gave an update on the Tennis Tourna-
ment. They are looking for donations for shirts. They have a
donation for water bottles. The Atlantic will be a co-sponsor.
The intent of the Friends is to use the monies made from the
tournaments the pst 3 years to refurbish the tennis courts. Han-
ley will be contacted for trophies.
Salter asked about the status Giordano's resignation. Cogan
noted that no resignation had been received. Kaminer said that
she would call him again about this issue.
Winter programs: Basketball - McFadden gave an overview of the
program and his recommendations for next year. A discussion was
held about the need for the School Committee to re-examine and
clarify their policies for building usage. A break down of ex-
penses for both the Travel Team and Sunday programs will be
given to help evaluate the fees for next year.
Ski program - 80 children participated this year, which was less
than last year. Due to an accounting error, we underpaid Brad-
ford Ski area. They did not notice the mistake, nor did we until
now when we were looking at surplus from the program. The group
advised that the monies not be spent at this time as the mistake
may be noticed next ski season.
Open Recreation - Cogan noted the recommendations of the people
who worked this year to raise the fees to be competitive with
other towns. They also suggested a monthly and annual pass. It
was noted that a number of participants were from out of town.
Discussion was held that perhaps one of those nights could be
used for practice for the Sunday basketball program.
Teen Subcommittee: Salter and Kaminer gave an overview of the
Patriots basketball night. A good time was had by all although
the numbers were a little disappointing. However, approximately
$1000 profit was made from the event and it was good exposure for
the Teen Committee. A Pool Party is planned for June at the
Ramanda Inn in Woburn for fifth and sixth graders (copy of the
flyer was passed around). Another party for the 7th and 8th
graders is in the planning stages including pizza and DJ Lloyd
for dancing.
The group ended discussion at 10:30 pm.
