January 12, 1994
The meeting of the Recreation Committee came to order at 7:35pm,
Wed., Jan. 12, 1994 in the Berger Rm. at Town Hall. Present at
the meeting were members Fred Conover, Chris Campbell, Ed Hanley,
Kate Kaminer, Gordon Richards, Steve Kajander, Rec. Supervisor
and Jessie Mraz, YMCA Director.
Approval of the minutes of Dec. 8, 1993 was motioned by Hanley.
Conover wanted the minutes to reflect additional dialogue about
police details for softball games. Kajander will add the neces-
sary verbiage. The motion was seconded by Campbell. The vote
was 5-0-0 for approval.
Jessie Mraz, Director of the YMCA,addressed the committee about a
proposal to co-produce a field day for Reading Residents in con-
junction with the June celebration dealing with the 350th. Marz
stated that the idea was in the beginning stages, and that if the
committee approved, a small sub-committee would be formed between
YMCA and recreation to develop the day's events. Conover mo-
tioned to endorse the idea of a joint venture with the YMCA, with
either volunteers or members being appointed by Kaminer to work
with YMCA in producing a field day for Reading families. Hanley
seconded the motion. Motion approved 5-0-0.
Kajander proceeded to outline his recommendations concerning the
enrollment of our summer camps 1194t0. He reviewed his research,
explaining the similarities with the other programs, to those of
Reading's. He included the recommendations of his staff, and he
reviewed the contents of a meeting which included Hechenbleikner,
Rene Dion, Fred Conover and himself. Kajander recommended a camp
limit of 120, with 15 slots held in reserve for those residents
who needed child care for the entire summer ( must be all four
sessions).
Conover also reviewed the meeting (Peter, Rene, Steve, Fred), and
pointed out Hechenbleikner's concern that the committee should
start planning for further expansion of the summer programs be-
cause of the increased number of young children who will be at-
tending Reading Schools in the future.
Kaminer expressed concern about
on the enrollment. She offered

Hanley made a motion to limit the session total to 120, and to
set aside 20 slots for children needing all 4 sessions with the
deadline for signup for these slots to coincide with the other
deadline, and to allow 2 weeks for parents to produce immuniza-
tion records, or the children will be dropped from the list with
refunds being sent out. Conover seconded the motion. All in
favor 5-0-0.
Kajander gave a brief review of the Recreation Dept. winter
programs. Skiing is now underway and both tennis and golf
started up this week. Basketball continues to be very successful
as well as Open Recreation. The January 9th basketball clinic
held at the Hawkes Field House was a complete success. Celtics
Jon Jennings and Chris Corchiani went over ball handling skills,
shooting skills, work ethics etc.
Kaminer related her conversation with Jerry Pothier and Lynn
Mahoney about the winter basketball league for special needs
children. Pothier was looking for trophies for the 20 children
enrolled in the program. Hanley will follow up, and Kajander
will make sure that the Challenger baseball league is on the
mailing list for field requests.
Kajander informed the committee that Tom Darrin has decided not
of offer a wrestling clinic this summer. The committee decided
that in the future, any clinic director that is late in paying
their 15% fee, should be asked to appear before the Recreation
Committee.
Kajander passed out information from EMARC about Camp Hope. A
few general questions were raised, and it was decided that some-
body from EMARC should attend the next meeting to field any ques-
tions before the Recreation Committee makes its annual donation.
Chris Campbell made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Conover
seconded the motion. All in favor 5-0-0.
Respectfully Submitted
