HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-03-09 Recreation Committee MinutesMinutes March 9, 1994 The Recreation Committee came to order at 7:40 p.m. on W i:jda it -1i March 9, 1994 in the Conference Room of Town Hall. Present ai~j 34 the meeting were members Kate Kaminer, Lorraine Salter, John Pacino, Gordon Richards, Sue Cavicchi, Ed Hanley, John McGrath, Fred Conover, and Chris Campbell; associate members Gary Roberts and Tom Zaya; staff Ruth Cogan; guests Jo Ann Simon, Marilyn Mar- tyniak, Paul Lucerto. The minutes were approved as presented on a motion by Salter, seconded by McGrath 7:0:2. Discussion with EMARC: Jo Ann Simon, the new Executive Director of EMARC, gave a presentation about changes in direction within the organization. They now offer recreation opportunities during the school year. Cogan noted that now that there is more than one vendor offering this activity, the Town would request proposals for next school year's program. Simon noted that she did not agree with the past philosophy of segregated special needs camps such as Camp Hope. She did not know whether they would be offering the camp this summer, or perhaps offering it with a different format, specifically as a prevocational training opportunity. It was noted that the present Reading participants are 13, 16 and 22 years old. She also offered the potential of staff training for the summer counselors. Hanley and Conover asked for a written proposal from EMARC based on Reading's needs. Kaminer noted that she will be meeting with the parents of the children who participated in the Challenger program for feedback on the summer camp. EMARC noted that they will put together a proposal. Appointment of liason to YMCA/Recreation Field Day for 350th celebration: Pacino volunteered for this. New summer program proposal: Karen Carcia put together a proposal for an Adult Swim Lesson Program. The charge would be- $35 for four weeks. It will be held on a weekday evening. The Committee voted 9:0:0 to approve the program on a motion by Cavicchi, seconded by Campbell. Draft Rules of Conduct for Participants in Reading Recreation Programs: Motion by Richards, seconded by Salter to approve the draft as presented, passed 9:0:0. Spring Field Assignments: Ed Hanley presented the subcommittee's proposed assignments: Challenger Baseball tennis court field Fri nights May 6 - June 24 6-7:30 p.m. Senior Youth Softball as requested Senior Youth Baseball April - June as requested June 11 Birch Meadows tennis crt til dusk j Women's Softball Eaton as requested Metcalf and Eddy as requested Tom Natale Barrows as requested Richard Wilson Parker upper field as requested Soccer spring and summer as requested with the following changes July 18 - 22 camp football practice field Barrows approved with date change to June 27 - Aug 11 Sturgis approved with date change June 27 August 11 Hanley noted that there had been no request from Men's Softball. It was noted that No Smoking will be added to all permits. Lucerto asked if the Cemetary Dept would be working at Batcheldor Field this summer, has soccer been reassigned from Parker, have we been actively pursing the Nike fields? Tennis tournament: Roberts gave a report on the June tournament for the 10 - 12th. The rain date will be two weeks later. The price will be the same as last year. Gary and Kate will meet with the Town Manager to discuss using the profits for repairs of the tennis courts. Swimming Pool Task Force: Salter gave a report on the progress of this group. She noted that it is a broad based group which has been meeting regularly. They have received quotes for three options: 1) same pool repaired for approximately $200,000 2) a much larger pool in a similar location with a 11211 shape for a separate diving area and "family splash area" for approximately $450,000 : 3) and enclosed 11Z11 for $1.4 million Substance Abuse Task Force: Richards gave an update on the Drug Free Weekend April 8 -10. The Boston Herald provided the artwork for the flyers. Other business: Discussion was held about Reading Trophy and Sport's donation to the Challenger Basketball League. If it is alright with the the business, an acknowledgment letter will be put in the Chronicle. Questions were asked as to why they did not get the Town's business for t-shirts. Cogan explained that they were not the lowest price when we received three telephone quotes per the state Procurement Law. She will inquire as to whether there are exceptions to this. Meeting adjourned at 10:10 p.m. on a motion by Cavicchi, seconded by McGrath. Respectfully submitted, ~t(& Ruth L Cogan v Acting Recreation Supervisor Minutes A meeting of the Recreation Committee came to order at 7:30 pm Wednesday, April 27, 1994 in the Employee Lounge of Town Hall. Present at the meeting were Chair Kate Kaminer, members Ed Han- ley, John Pacino, Gordon Richards, Sue Cavicchi, John McGrath; associate member Tom Zaya; guests Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner and Joe Connelly. Hechenbleikner gave a brief introduction and introduced Joe Con- nelly. Joe gave a description of his background and answered questions. Hechenbleikner suggested that a meeting's agenda be set aside exclusively for brainstorming. Connelly left and a discussion was held by the Committee. The Committee was unanimous in their endorsement of Connelly as the next Recreation Admininstrator. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm. Respectfully submitted, , u.. Ruth L.
