Discussion with EMARC: Jo Ann Simon, the new Executive Director
of EMARC, gave a presentation about changes in direction within
the organization. They now offer recreation opportunities during
the school year. Cogan noted that now that there is more than
one vendor offering this activity, the Town would request
proposals for next school year's program. Simon noted that she
did not agree with the past philosophy of segregated special
needs camps such as Camp Hope. She did not know whether they
would be offering the camp this summer, or perhaps offering it
with a different format, specifically as a prevocational training
opportunity. It was noted that the present Reading participants
are 13, 16 and 22 years old. She also offered the potential of
staff training for the summer counselors. Hanley and Conover
asked for a written proposal from EMARC based on Reading's needs.
Kaminer noted that she will be meeting with the parents of the
children who participated in the Challenger program for feedback
on the summer camp. EMARC noted that they will put together a
proposal.
Appointment of liason to YMCA/Recreation Field Day for 350th
celebration: Pacino volunteered for this.
New summer program proposal: Karen Carcia put together a
proposal for an Adult Swim Lesson Program. The charge would be-
$35 for four weeks. It will be held on a weekday evening. The
Committee voted 9:0:0 to approve the program on a motion by
Cavicchi, seconded by Campbell.

for the 10 - 12th. The rain date will be two weeks later. The
price will be the same as last year. Gary and Kate will meet with
the Town Manager to discuss using the profits for repairs of the
tennis courts.
Swimming Pool Task Force: Salter gave a report on the progress
of this group. She noted that it is a broad based group which
has been meeting regularly. They have received quotes for three
options: 1) same pool repaired for approximately $200,000 2) a
much larger pool in a similar location with a 11211 shape for a
separate diving area and "family splash area" for approximately
$450,000 : 3) and enclosed 11Z11 for $1.4 million
Substance Abuse Task Force: Richards gave an update on the Drug
Free Weekend April 8 -10. The Boston Herald provided the artwork
for the flyers.
Other business: Discussion was held about Reading Trophy and
Sport's donation to the Challenger Basketball League. If it is
alright with the the business, an acknowledgment letter will be
put in the Chronicle. Questions were asked as to why they did
not get the Town's business for t-shirts. Cogan explained that
they were not the lowest price when we received three telephone
quotes per the state Procurement Law. She will inquire as to
whether there are exceptions to this.
Meeting adjourned at 10:10 p.m. on a motion by Cavicchi, seconded
by McGrath.
