HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-06-11 Recreation Committee MinutesRecreation Committee Minutes June 11, 1997 The Recreation Committee meeting came to order on Wednesday, June 11, 1997 at 7:30 PM in the Conference Room at Reading Town Hall. Committee members in attendance included Chris Campbell, Claire Bolger, John Pacino, John McGrath, Dave Bryant, and Sue Cavicchi. Also in attendance was Recreation Administrator Joe Connelly. Pacino made a motion to approve the minutes of the Wednesday, May 15, 1997 meeting, McGrath seconded the motion, approved 6-0-0 Committee member Kate Kaminer entered the meeting at 7:45 PM. Committee member Lorraine Salter entered the meeting at 7:50 PM. New Business: Connelly reviewed the FY98 Estimated Budget and Fees for Winter Programming. Connelly explained that the goal of the Recreation Division in FY 98 is to be able to turn back $39,197 to the Town. Connelly stated that this amount covered the administrators expense and did not, include electricity, travel, and office supplies. - Cavicchi commented that the Town was moving in the right direction by picking up the electricity, travel, and office supplies expenses. Connelly reviewed the estimated expenses and revenues for each Winter program. Connelly stated that a $7,000 cushion has been factored into the net surplus to cover unexpected expenses. Connelly reminded the Committee that the entire pre-season budget is based on estimates from the past three years. The Committee asked Connelly questions as he reviewed the estimated budget and fee structure. Cavicchi asked Connelly why the science workshop program was canceled this last year after being successful two years ago. Connelly explained that last year the program was offered during the month of April instead of February. Connelly stated that he believed April was a bad month to offer indoor programming. Associate member Dennis Lucyniak entered the meeting at 8:00 PM. Connelly reviewed the Sunday Basketball League program. Pacino made a motion to amend the recommended fees of $60, $56, $52 for 1997 to last years fees of $56, $52, $48. Kaminer seconded the motion. The Committee discussed the motion. Pacino feels strongly that fees for Reading Recreation programs should stay as low as possible. Connelly explained that although a $7,000 cushion has been built into the fee structure, Recreation has to anticipate unexpected cost throughout the year. Bryant commented that a $4 increase included an extra week of play and a coaches clinic. Bryant suggested that the participants are getting more for their money. The Committee voted on the amendment, defeated 1-6-0. Connelly reviewed the Travel Basketball program. Pacino made a motion to amend the recommended fee for the 1997 travel basketball program of $120 to $135 and change the Sunday program fees to $57, $53, and $49. Motion seconded by Kaminer. The Committee discussed the motion. Pacino stated that the Sunday program fee should be reduced and the Travel program fee increased. The Committee agreed that Travel program participants were receiving more for their money than the Sunday program participants. Connelly pointed out the percentage change in fees this would cause in the Travel Basketball fee. The Committee voted on the motion, motion defeated 4-4-0. Connelly explained the "new" Jr. Open Recreation program. The Committee asked Connelly question regarding age restrictions and age appropriateness of the program. Connelly stated that he was not sure of the exact ages at this time but, believes it is between the grades of 5-8. Cavicchi made a motion to accept the FY 98 Estimated Budgets and Recommended Fees for Winter Programming as presented, seconded by Bryant, approved 7-1-0. Administrators Report: Connelly reviewed the Recreation Administrators Report. Connelly reviewed conversations with the Town Manger regarding the Austin Preparatory negotiations. Connelly asked for volunteers to help out with the 1997 Summer Touch of Class Concerts. Lucyniak volunteered to help out at the 7/13 concert and Kaminer volunteered to help out with the 7/20 concert. Salter and Kaminer reviewed the success of the 1997 Tennis Open sponsored by the Friends of Reading Recreation. Connelly reviewed the up coming Celebrity Softball game and the concern regarding telemarketing. The Committee discussed these concerns. Connelly discussed with the Committee complaints received regarding the Colonial Manor sign at the Imagination Station Playground. The Committee discussed these complaints. Connelly reviewed the current status of the Grant Municipal Pool and current Summer registration numbers. Kaminer motioned to adjourn, seconded by Bolger, approved 8-0-0. The Recreation Committee was adjourned at 9:15 PM.
