Recreation Committee Minutes
Wednesday, February 11, 1998
The Recreation Committee meeting came to order on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at 7:30 PM
in the Conference Room at Reading Town Hall. Committee members in attendance included Chris
Campbell, Kate Kaminer, Dave Bryant, Jack Downing, Pam Andren, Lorraine Salter and Dennis
Lucyniak. Also in attendance was Associate Member Mark Nelson, and Recreation Administrator
Joe Connelly.
Kaminer made a motion to approve the minutes of the Thursday, January 15, 1998 meeting,
Bryant seconded the motion, approved 7-0-0.
Committee member Claire Bolger entered the meeting at 7:45 PM.
New Business:
Connelly reviewed his meeting with the Spring in town sport directors regarding practice
permitting.
Connelly reviewed the latest draft of the practice schedule with the Committee.
The Committee discussed permitting practices.
Connelly and the Committee discussed the flooding of Castine Field for next season.
Connelly explained that the Committee would have to take an official vote regarding this issue
before next Fall.
Connelly reviewed the latest capital improvements made to Lighted Field.
Connelly and Lucyniak shared their plans to place protective fencing at the youth baseball and
softball diamonds in town.
Connelly presented the Committee with two requests for special Sunday morning field permits.
Kaminer motioned to approve the special Sunday morning request from Reading Youth Baseball
to begin at 11:00 AM on June 14, 1998 and June 28, 1998 at Hunt Park. The motion was
seconded by Salter, approved 7-0-1.
Connelly reviewed the second request from Diana McKee of the Eastern Massachusetts Women's
Soccer League.
Connelly explained that with the reconditioning of Parker/Collins Field and the loss of the Birch
Meadow Temporary field, Coolidge Middle School soccer field became the only full size field
available.
The Committee discussed whether or not to allow the EMWSL to begin play on Sunday before
12 Noon.
The Committee elected to permit the Coolidge soccer field to the EMWSL for two Sunday dates
(4/19 and 5/10) from 4 PM - 6 PM and one Sunday date in late May (May 31) from 6 PM - 8 PM.
Connelly reviewed the reasons why the Sunday basketball program supports one week of 3 v. 3
play.
Connelly discussed situations related to the girls travel basketball program.
Connelly and the Committee discussed the Longwood Poultry Farm and potential active
recreation uses.
Connelly reviewed the remainder of the Recreation Administrator's report with the Committee.
Connelly reminded the Committee that the March meeting would have to be changed due to the
second Recreation sponsored track meet.
Downing reminded Connelly that Town meeting may be meeting on Thursday, March 12, 1998.
Connelly stated that he would look into finding a suitable date for the next meeting and would
contact each Committee member.
Kaminer motioned to adjourn, seconded by Lucyniak, approved 8-0-0.
The Recreation Committee was adjourned at 9:05 PM.
