Minutes of Meeting - January 22, 1990
Conference Room - Reading Public Library - 6:00 p.m.
Present: Dr. Christine Redford, chair; Mrs. Carol Beckwith; Mr. William
Diamond; Ms. Cherrie Dubois; Mr. Robert Fields; Mrs. Elia Marnik.
Dr. Redford called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m.
Minutes: Ms. DuBois moved that the minutes of December 11 be approved. ThE
motion passed.
Statistical report: The final statistics report for December was not yet
available, due to the necessity of transferring two weeks' worth of
data from the backup system to the main computer.
Director's report: Peabody Institute has accepted the offer tendered by
NOBLE. The idea of giving tapes and CDs to the library for Christmas
was considered worth repeating this year, with hopes for a bigger
response.
Communications: The Reading Photographic Society has offered to reserve
$75 in its budget to pay for repairs to the library's slide projector.
Unfinished business: 1) The Director has been asked to prepare a third
budget for FY91, with an additional $48,66.0 in cuts. Mrs. Marnik moved
that the Board accept the cuts as outlined by Ms. Flannery and as
prioritized by the Board (appended). The motion passed.
The Friends of the Library have chosen not to be politically active in
the override campaign. It was suggested that a Board member send a
letter to the editor of the Chronicle concerning the library's budget.
The Board went into Executive session between 7:25 and 7:30.
2) The Director presented a mock-up of the gift brochure.
New business: 1) Corinne Fisher gave an update on Children's Division
activities. The "Rookie Reader" grant was used to expand the easy
reader collection. Friday films for preschoolers draw 200 people. The
spring storyhour series will take 300 children, up from 216 last year.
Brenda Wettergreen is taking her sixth MLS course this semester. The
rest of the new carpet will be installed in February.
2) The Board approved a change in the meeting room policy, to read,
"Partisan political groups, with the exception of elected Town
committees, will not be permitted to use the meeting rooms." The Board
denied a request to use the meeting room for a Bible study.
3) Friends of Muf Shaw and donors to her memorial fund have agreed that
one or two prints by Elmer Rising would be an appropriate memorial.
The originally agreed-upon CD station is no longer appropriate now that
the library can no longer purchase CDs. Mr. Diamond moved that Ms.
Flannery be authorized to proceed with the memorial for Muf Shaw as
discussed. The motion passed.
4) The library has received an offer of a donation of an oil painting.
Some Board members and Ms. Flannery will view the painting.

5) Because the Secretary's desk is ergonomically unsound, Ms. Flannery
requested authorization to buy a $1000 desk and computer table. Mr.
Diamond moved that the library buy the units recommended by the
Director. The motion passed.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
Minutes of Executive Session: The Board voted to rename the Local History
Room in honor of Miriam Barclay and Eleanor Bishop.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane J. Y ung
Assistant Director
